CONTEXT
The research lecture series consisted of nineteen topics encompassing different components of research such as (1) Timeline of the Module, (2) Research Proposal Paper Format, (3) CDU-CM Research Centers, (4) CDU Research Process & Guidelines, (5) Research Requirements & Research Process, (6) Defining the Research Problem, (7) Formulation of the Research Objectives & Hypothesis, (8) Establishing the Theoretical & Empirical Basis of Research, (9) Library Instruction, (10) Basic Epidemiology, (11) Health Research Designs, (12) Qualitative Research Designs, (13) Data Collection & Sampling Designs, (14) Definition of Terms, (15) Sample Size Determination & Data Analysis, (16) Research Procedure, (17) Data Analysis, (18) Ethics in Research, and (19) Intellectual Property Rights. These lectures were held both online and face-to-face by various lecturers. Through this lecture series, students were able to learn about the systematic process of conducting research (PO6), attend lectures that aid in their academic development (PO7), engage in research activities (PO4), and equip themselves with the skills needed to competently conduct their research (PO1).
EXPERIENCE
This consecutive lecture series felt overwhelming for me at first since it was quite fast paced. However, as the topics went on, I felt grateful to be able to have these lessons. I saw how each topic connected to one another and how each was essential to research as a whole. As a result of these lectures, first, I was able to know more about the structured framework of research. Second, I was exposed to a more in depth discussion of research components which helped expand my knowledge on these areas. Third, I was inspired to conduct my own research in the medical field. Lastly, I was able to learn skills essential in conducting research such as knowing how to critically review relevant literature, gather data, interpret, and analyze results.
REFLECTION
First, I have learned about how successful research relies on methodical planning and execution. Research is more than just data collection. Second, I have developed a deeper appreciation for these lessons as it pushed me to think critically and innovatively when it comes to research. I also realized that research can help me have a better understanding of clinical principles and complex scientific methodologies. Third, these lessons have not only contributed to my academic growth, but have also instilled within me a mindset of lifelong learning and adaptability. Lastly, I learned about the importance of conducting a research well in order to have findings that are ethical, credible, accurate, and evidence-based.
ACTION
First, I will meticulously plan my research and break the process down into manageable components to ensure that each phase of the study is executed well. Second, I will apply the skills I have learned to my research such as critical thinking and problem-solving as well as further hone my skills by attending future workshops or seminars on research writing. Third, I plan on developing my research output with the mindset of exploring new knowledge and drawing meaningful conclusions in order to contribute to the medical field. Lastly, I aim to use my lessons not only as a blueprint to guide my research, but also as motivation to delve deeper, to better understand the significance of certain phenomenons, and to provide more scientific and evidence-based conclusions.
EVALUATION
My experience during this lecture series has deepened my understanding of research in medical science and has equipped me with the essential skills and knowledge to conduct my own research. This research lecture series has made me appreciate medical knowledge, the importance of continuous development, and the power of evidence-based decision-making. Moreover, it has helped me realize that research in medicine is not just an academic pursuit, but also serves a pivotal role in medical education that prepares students like me for our future medical careers.
