CONTEXT
This module covers the generalities of Pathology, Microbiology, Surgery, Radiology, and Pharmacology. Pathology focuses on the study of diseases, including their causes, processes, development, and effects on the body. Surgery involves operative procedures to treat diseases, injuries, or deformities through manual or instrumental means. Pharmacology is the study of drugs, encompassing their effects, mechanisms of action, and therapeutic uses. Microbiology examines microorganisms—such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites—and their roles in health and disease. Radiology is a medical field that employs imaging techniques, including X-rays, MRI, and CT scans, to diagnose and treat diseases. These fields of study provide crucial information in medical education. As a result of this module, the following specific objectives were achieved: demonstrating clinical competence (PO1), utilizing a systems-based approach (PO6), and engaging in personal and professional development (PO7).
EXPERIENCE
I definitely struggled with this module. The lessons were new, unfamiliar, and fast-paced, especially considering that we had just returned from summer vacation. Despite my initial struggles, this module incorporated various learning activities that helped me not only absorb the basic principles but also understand how they apply to clinical scenarios. First, the lectures provided a comprehensive overview of the theoretical aspects of Pathology, Microbiology, Surgery, Radiology, and Pharmacology. The clarity and depth of the lectures helped me build a stronger foundation in topics I was unfamiliar with (PO1). Second, having struggled to fully grasp each topic, I had to be systematic in the way I studied. The laboratory sessions in Pathology and Microbiology allowed me to observe and engage with specimens, which deepened my understanding of the principles and mechanisms being taught (PO6). Lastly, the activities in the module helped foster critical thinking and lifelong learning for my professional development, while also helping me to reflect on my strengths and weaknesses for personal development (PO7).
REFLECTION
I realized how critical it is to have a strong grasp of the basic principles and mechanisms in Pathology, Microbiology, Surgery, Radiology, and Pharmacology. Initially, I struggled to adjust to the pace and volume of the material. Coming from summer vacation, my mind was still in a relaxed mode, making it difficult to immediately dive into the demands of school. However, as the module progressed, I began to find my rhythm again and recognized the importance of consistency and perseverance. By pushing through the initial difficulties, my understanding deepened, and I felt more confident in my clinical knowledge. Second, I recognized the interconnectedness of the various disciplines in medicine, highlighting the need for a comprehensive and integrated approach in order to have accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Lastly, this module helped me realize my need for self-improvement. The challenges I faced urged me to develop better study habits and time management skills, and taught me the importance of being kind to myself and appreciating setbacks as part of the learning process.
ACTION
First, I plan to establish a more structured study schedule to prevent the feelings of overwhelm I initially experienced and to ensure that I internalize information effectively. Second, I intend to participate in more group study sessions and seek help from friends with different pre-med backgrounds, especially in areas where I struggle. Lastly, although consistency and hard work are essential, I plan to maintain a balance between study and rest, taking breaks and ensuring time for self-care to prevent burnout in future modules.
EVALUATION
This module has been a significant learning experience, not only academically but also personally. I learned the importance of having a strong foundational understanding of basic medical principles, which is essential for creating differential diagnoses and developing management plans. Reflecting on my performance and attitude during this module, I recognize that I initially struggled with the transition from vacation mode to the increased demands of schoolwork. This adjustment difficulty affected my performance quite a bit, but once I found my rhythm, I was able to catch up and improve in both the theoretical and practical aspects of the module. Despite the challenges, I now feel more confident in my ability to tackle the complexities of future modules and apply what I have learned in clinical practice.
