CONTEXT
This module explores the hematopoietic system, which is responsible for the production, development, and regulation of blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, primarily occurring in the bone marrow. This module tackles various hematologic disorders, including anemias, hemoglobinopathies, and bleeding disorders, providing insights into their pathophysiology, biochemical and genetic mechanisms, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and management. Additionally, transfusion medicine was comprehensively discussed, emphasizing the importance of understanding blood groups and the proper use of blood products. Through this module, the following objectives were achieved: clinical competence (PO1), collaboration (PO5), and continuous learning and personal growth (PO7).
EXPERIENCE
Coming from the intense cardiovascular module, I found this block to be a much-needed breather. The cardiovascular system was dense and overwhelming, requiring a deep understanding of both physiological and pathological processes. In contrast, the hematopoietic module felt more familiar due to my medical technology background. However, this familiarity also led to some complacency. I initially underestimated the module, assuming my prior knowledge would be enough.
Despite this, I still put in the effort to compensate for my previous module’s performance. I actively engaged in lectures, SGD cases, and laboratory sessions, which refined my clinical reasoning skills (PO1). The SGDs allowed me to discuss case scenarios confidently, as my medtech background helped me contribute valuable insights (PO5). I was able to explain concepts like peripheral blood smear findings in hemoglobinopathies and the laboratory workup for bleeding disorders to my peers. In terms of continuous learning and personal growth (PO7), I realized that relying solely on past knowledge was not enough. Reviewing forgotten topics, such as the genetic basis of hemoglobinopathies, helped solidify my understanding. More importantly, this module became a test of character for me. Instead of fixating on perfectionism, I focused on finishing the block strong and practicing self-compassion. I am proud of my perseverance and progress.
REFLECTION
First, this module reinforced the reality that clinical competence is built progressively. Even with a medtech background, I realized that mastering hematology in a medical context requires a deeper level of understanding—one that extends beyond laboratory techniques to encompass clinical decision-making and patient management. Diagnosing hematologic disorders is not just about recognizing lab abnormalities but also about integrating clinical findings with laboratory results to make well-informed decisions. Second, I also learned the value of collaboration and teamwork in medicine. Initially, I was hesitant to share my insights, assuming my groupmates already understood the concepts. However, as the discussions progressed, I saw that my contributions were helpful in clarifying topics. Likewise, hearing others’ perspectives deepened my own understanding. Lastly, I acknowledged my tendency to be overly critical of myself, especially when I fall short of academic expectations. This module reminded me that learning is not just about numbers, but about developing resilience and character.
ACTION
First, I plan to study more clinical cases, focus on integrating laboratory findings with patient symptoms, and actively participate in discussions to strengthen my diagnostic skills. Second, I will make a conscious effort to contribute more during SGDs by sharing insights while also learning from my peers, ensuring discussions are more interactive and productive. Lastly, I aim to prioritize fully understanding concepts rather than just focusing on grades. I will regularly review forgotten topics, adopt better study habits, and practice self-compassion when facing setbacks. My goal is to complete each module with a stronger foundation for my future medical practice.
EVALUATION
Reflecting on my attitude and performance during this module, I recognize both strengths and areas for improvement. I am proud of my perseverance, my active participation in discussions, and my effort to review past concepts. Academically, I did my best to compensate for my previous module’s performance, and although my results were not as high as I had hoped, I am satisfied with the effort I put in. More importantly, I finished this block with a stronger appreciation for hematology, a better understanding of my learning process, and a renewed commitment to growth. Moving forward, I will apply the lessons from this module not just in hematology, but in my overall medical education.
