CONTEXT
This lesson involves a lecture and small group discussion on interviewing techniques and communication skills. Both skills are essential for gathering valuable and key information from patients that is vital for diagnostic accuracy. Moreover, the effectiveness of these techniques can also help establish rapport and a caring relationship between physicians and patients via communication. As such, this module aims to achieve the following objectives: demonstrating clinical competence (PO1), effective communication (PO2), and employing systematic procedures (PO6).
EXPERIENCE
The module begins with a lecture by Dr. Sitoy. Throughout her discussion, she provides numerous situational examples with patients and demonstrates how we, as physicians, should handle and direct conversations in a respectful, courteous, and kind manner. It was during this lecture that I was truly amazed by how she spoke. She helped me understand and internalize how we should interview and communicate with patients and how to apply what I was learning into practice (PO1). During our small group discussion, we shared our insights regarding the earlier lecture, with each of us communicating the key points of the topic (PO2). It was also in this module that we were taught the systematic way of interviewing to ensure that we take note of every detail essential to the patient’s diagnosis (PO6). Discovering these techniques was particularly interesting as they were new to me.
REFLECTION
Through this module, I first realized that accurately diagnosing a patient involves the ability to gather crucial data and distinguish what is truly relevant. A patient can express numerous emotions and symptoms, and it is up to the physician to gather and organize all that data to create a cohesive picture of the patient’s ailment. Second, I realized that communication involves various factors between a physician and a patient. Key factors in this interaction include speaking in a manner that they understand, being empathic, actively listening, and developing a genuine connection. Patients are humans who experience emotions and physical discomfort, so it is always important to remember to be courteous, respectful, and empathetic towards them, in addition to treating each equally. Lastly, I learned that in order to ensure that no vital information is missed, following the interview techniques step-by-step can help in this process. Moreover, taking note of the different communication skills can ensure that a genuine relationship is cultivated simultaneously while conducting the interview.
ACTION
Firstly, to develop my ability to gather and organize information, I can seek advice from my mentors and seniors on navigating patient interactions more effectively. Additionally, engaging in role-play scenarios with friends and groupmates will help me develop my interviewing skills. Secondly, I aim to improve my communication skills, especially when it comes to being empathetic, courteous, and respectful. I can do so by seeking feedback from my family and friends about my manner of speaking, incorporating this skill into everyday life. Lastly, I plan on consistently using a checklist when practicing my interviewing and communication skills, ensuring that no steps are missed. This systematic approach can help me become more aware of my weaknesses.
EVALUATION
Overall, this module, though short, was impactful. I learned about interviewing and how to communicate with patients—both skills I need to improve and practice. This module, focusing on learning how to talk to patients and acquire crucial information, serves as a practical guide for me to become a better doctor. It is not just about being smart, but also about being kind, strategic, and organized. Through this module, I have found ways to improve and make changes in how I approach things. This journey of learning practical lessons and skills like these will ultimately help me become a doctor who is not only clinically competent but also one who connects, communicates, and cares.
