CONTEXT
On June 7, 2024, our group presented our research paper, including the main points such as the methodology, results, and discussion, during our defense. The panelists then had the opportunity to ask questions about our research, prompting us to explain and defend specific aspects of the paper. Finally, the panelists gave us feedback and determined that we had successfully passed our defense. This experience, along with completing the paper, helped me achieve the following objectives: engaging in research activities (PO4), effectively working as a team (PO5), and engaging in continuing personal and professional development (PO7).
EXPERIENCE
There were a lot of mixed feelings for me when it finally came to the day of the defense — feelings of excitement and of fear. Months of hard work culminated in this moment where our paper would be scrutinized. We tried our best to prepare in every way we could through practice questions and meetings with our mentor. The defense definitely served as a testament to our dedication and collaboration as a team. Throughout the research, we constantly brainstormed ideas, divided tasks, and provided constructive feedback on each other's drafts (PO5). As a team, we delved deep into our chosen topic. We conducted a thorough literature review, collected data from Level III and IV medical students, and analyzed our findings. These activities honed our skills in critically evaluating existing research, interpreting data, and synthesizing information into meaningful conclusions (PO4). The defense and presentation itself provided a valuable platform to showcase our research. Preparing clear visuals, practicing my delivery, and anticipating questions helped me refine my communication skills as well as my knowledge of our paper. These activities demonstrate my commitment to continuous learning and improvement (PO7).
REFLECTION
First, data collection was initially challenging due to changes in our respondent pool and difficulty reaching them. Interpreting the data also had its own hurdles. However, these research activities ultimately fostered my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I learned to interpret data, identify limitations, and formulate impactful conclusions. Second, collaboration was vital to our success. We established clear communication channels within the group, sharing drafts and holding meetings to discuss revisions. This experience also taught me to delegate tasks efficiently, capitalizing on each team member's strengths. For example, a member with data analysis skills complemented another's strong writing skills, ensuring each research stage received dedicated attention. Finally, I recognized the impact the preparation for the defense had on me. Engaging in writing workshops, seeking feedback, and reflecting on my work and progress were all crucial aspects of this developmental process. Through this experience, I learned to embrace feedback as a tool for growth, not criticism. This approach to learning and development made me more resilient and adaptable, especially when facing potentially harsh comments from the panelists.
ACTION
First, to enhance my engagement in research activities, I will be more mindful of deadlines and plan effectively to avoid last-minute revisions and issues. For future research endeavors, I plan to develop a time management plan and utilize more university resources to aid in navigating complex academic databases and methodologies if needed. Second, to improve my teamwork skills, I plan to use more synchronous communication methods, like video calls or in-person meetings, to ensure clear and timely information exchange with my groupmates. Protocols for resolving group conflicts is also something I should learn for the future. Lastly, regarding continuing personal and professional development, I plan to actively participate in more research conferences or seminars to learn about different research methodologies and presentation styles. My learnings from these activities will then be applied to my own research.
EVALUATION
The research paper defense and presentation were valuable learning experiences for me. We successfully completed our research paper, collaborated effectively as a team, and presented our findings confidently to the panelists. Personally, I have developed a deeper understanding and appreciation for research, the importance of teamwork, and the significance of continuous learning. These experiences not only enhanced my academic capabilities but also equipped me with valuable skills for my future career. There is always room for improvement, but I am confident that the lessons learned from this will continue to guide my growth and success throughout my medical journey.
