CONTEXT
This module focused on the urinary system, covering its anatomy, physiology, and pathology, with particular emphasis on diseases such as glomerulopathies, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and acute and chronic kidney injury. It also addressed general approaches to the diagnosis and management of renal diseases. As a result, the following objectives were achieved: demonstrating clinical competence (PO1), utilizing a systematic approach (PO6), and fostering continuous learning and personal development (PO7).
EXPERIENCE
This module was one of the more challenging ones for me, similar to the cardiovascular module. My biggest struggle was differentiating renal diseases, as the variations were often based on subtle morphological changes that were not easy to grasp. However, with the help of lectures that provided a fundamental understanding of the urinary system’s structure and function, SGD cases that allowed me to apply this knowledge in clinical scenarios, and pathology laboratory sessions that helped differentiate the morphology of renal diseases, I was able to develop a clearer picture of these conditions (PO1).
Another major challenge was time constraints. With the heavy workload and low energy levels, I had to be more strategic in my studying (PO6). Instead of passively reading, I focused on high-yield topics, used active recall, and made concise notes to maximize retention. Despite these efforts, the physical and mental exhaustion was real. There were moments when I felt like I was not doing enough, but I had to remind myself that progress is not measured by perfection. I learned to balance high expectations with self-compassion, recognizing that doing my best does not always mean giving my all but rather making the most of the resources and energy I had at the time (PO7).
REFLECTION
First, I realized that despite the difficulty of this module, it strengthened my clinical competence through a combination of lectures, case discussions, and lab work. The SGDs pushed me to think critically and apply theoretical knowledge to real-life scenarios, while the pathology lab sessions, although challenging, were invaluable in deepening my understanding of disease processes. Second, I learned the importance of having a systematic approach to studying. Time management was crucial, and I had to let go of the unrealistic expectation of mastering everything at once. Instead, I focused on efficiency—targeting weak areas like pharmacology, prioritizing high-yield concepts, and using study techniques that worked best for me. Lastly, I acknowledge that this module tested my perseverance. There were times when I felt mentally and physically drained, but I pushed through. I learned that self-compassion is just as important as discipline. I did not always have to be at peak performance. Sometimes, just showing up and doing my best in that moment was enough, regardless of the outcome.
ACTION
First, since most of my mistakes in the exams were in pharmacology, I plan to create personalized drug tables and incorporate case-based learning to improve application and retention. To enhance my ability to differentiate between renal diseases, I will use flowcharts and mind maps for better visualization and reinforce concepts through group discussions. Second, I will continue refining my study strategies by summarizing key takeaways right after lectures, using the Pomodoro technique to maintain focus, and scheduling targeted review sessions to address weak areas. Lastly, given the toll this module took on my energy, I aim to be more intentional with self-care—taking breaks when needed, maintaining proper sleep and nutrition, and reminding myself that it is okay to pace myself.
EVALUATION
Overall, I think I did okay in this module. There were definite struggles, particularly with pharmacology and disease differentiation, but I adapted and found ways to work through them. My clinical competence improved through various learning activities, and I became more systematic in my approach to studying. More importantly, I learned to manage setbacks and push through exhaustion, which will be crucial moving forward. This module was a tough but necessary learning experience for me. I did not master everything perfectly, but I made progress, and that is what matters. Moving forward, I will continue refining my study methods, addressing my weaknesses, and reminding myself that growth takes time. Each challenge is just another step toward becoming a better doctor.
