CONTEXT
This PDR module encompasses lectures and tutorials on medical hand washing and measuring vital signs namely: blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate, axillary temperature, height, weight, and body mass index. Through this module, the following program outcomes were achieved: demonstrate clinical competence (PO1), effective communication (PO2), and systematic approach to medical procedures (PO6).
EXPERIENCE
I enjoyed this module a lot as I was able to learn more about medical hand washing and vital signs — procedures that I did not perform often in my pre-med. I also liked how this module included an adequate amount of practice sessions with our facilitator. The hands-on experience allowed us to apply what we had learned, promoting clinical competence and skill enhancement (PO1). As we practiced hand washing techniques and vital signs, effective communication was also cultivated as we clearly voiced out each step of the procedure as well as instructed our patients comprehensively on what to do (PO2). Throughout this module, the systematic nature of these procedures were always emphasized. From the step-by-step hand washing procedure to the precise measurement and documentation of vital signs, a structured and organized methodology was consistently highlighted (PO6).
REFLECTION
First, through the lecture and practice sessions I had with medical hand washing and vital signs, I realized that competence is not only about performing a task well and paying attention to its detail, but also about understanding the rationale behind each step as well as acknowledging its implications for my future patients. Having that deeper understanding and internalizing each step by heart are some things that I personally need to improve on. Second, I realized the vital role communication has in performing medical procedures. For instance, when measuring vital signs, clear instructions are crucial for patients to understand what procedures are being performed on them and subsequently, what they have to do. Their compliance in addition to a doctor’s clinical competence result in more accurate readings and proper interpretation of results. It is also important to note that effective communication in healthcare goes beyond verbal articulation. It encompasses non-verbal cues, active listening, and the ability to convey complex information in a patient-friendly manner. In terms of my communication skills, I believe that I can still improve the way I coherently express my thoughts to others, specifically in terms of empathy and clarity. Lastly, I learned the significance of having a systematic and meticulous protocol with regards to medical procedures such as hand washing and measuring vital signs. This allows for consistency and standardized practice in healthcare settings as well as accuracy and precision, which are crucial for patient safety and quality care.
ACTION
First, I plan on further enhancing my skills in hand washing and vital signs by practicing at home with my family and asking for their feedback. I can also go through the steps on my own by making checklists based on the step-by-step procedures, so that I can evaluate my performance afterwards as well as identify areas I need to improve on. Second, I aim to actively seek more opportunities for me to apply the skills I have learned in PDR by volunteering for medical activities and simulation exercises that can help expand my clinical skills. Lastly, I can improve my communication skills by participating in activities such as role-playing, communication workshops, or seeking advice from my seniors and mentors on how to develop a more patient-centered communication style.
EVALUATION
This module on medical hand washing and vital signs has been an enlightening experience. I was able to learn more about the procedures of hand washing and vital signs that were not familiar to me, as well as gained a more holistic understanding of these protocols in terms of its implications and importance to healthcare and patient well-being. Moreover, I believe that my attitude and performance throughout this module were also okay. I was receptive to the feedback of my facilitators and was eager to learn from my mentors as well as my groupmates who were more experienced with these procedures. Overall, I enjoyed this module and am really grateful to be able to have this class as an individual who barely had any background on it in the beginning.
