CONTEXT
The nervous system, comprising the brain, spinal cord, and a complex network of nerves, serves as the major controlling, regulatory, and communicating system within the body. It facilitates the transmission of messages between the brain and the body, encompassing sensory stimuli reception and the transmission of impulses to effector organs or glands to generate a response. This module covers fundamental aspects of neuroembryology, anatomy, neuromuscular interactions, reflex arcs, divisions, and the general functions of the nervous system through lectures, small group discussions, and laboratory activities. The objectives achieved through this module include effective communication (PO2), leadership and group management (PO3), and engagement in research activities (PO4).
EXPERIENCE
Learning about the complexities of the nervous system has been challenging for me. The unfamiliarity of the topics made it difficult for me to keep up with lectures and small group discussions. Nevertheless, knowing more about the intricacies of the nervous system left me in awe. It was interesting to learn about how the nervous system develops, how signals are transmitted, how responses are produced, how reflexes are generated, and many more. The laboratory classes, in particular, were enjoyable for me. Through our small group discussions, we were able to read more about the different aspects of the nervous system, gaining new information that many of us did not know (PO4). We also tried our best to simplify complex principles during discussions to aid each other's understanding (PO2). Moreover, I also had the opportunity to lead a case discussion, guiding the conversation and encouraging participation from all members (PO3).
REFLECTION
First, I learned about how the brain, spinal cord, and nerves work as a whole in order to make meaning out of stimuli and intricately respond. It is truly amazing to see just how involved the nervous system is in everything we do, from the simplest of movements to the most complex of thoughts. Second, I realized the importance of having a solid foundation of the theoretical concepts and practical applications involved in the nervous system as this understanding plays a pivotal role when it comes to correlating the cause and effect of different neurological conditions later on. Although having small group discussions and study sessions with my group really helped clarify complex concepts, I still feel that there are some aspects of the topic that I am confused about. I also believe that I need to improve my ability to simplify information when it comes to difficult topics such as this. Third, this module made me realize that one of my greatest weaknesses is anatomy. For instance, visualizing descriptions of the brain and spinal cord was particularly challenging for me, but the laboratory sessions significantly improved my comprehension. Lastly, I realized that when it comes to leading the group discussion, I still need to improve in terms of organization. I felt that I could have made the discussion a lot smoother if I had read the topic before the meeting.
ACTION
First, I want to learn more by doing my own research on the nervous system. I think that self-study would help me understand it better. Second, I want to have more group study sessions with my friends as it motivates me to be productive and also to not be discouraged when there is something I do not understand. Third, I plan to volunteer more in group discussions and presentations in the future. This will not only help me explain complex ideas more clearly but also improve my ability to lead and manage discussions effectively. Lastly, I plan to maximize my laboratory sessions by studying before the meetings, listening well to the facilitators, and examining the specimens well.
EVALUATION
Understanding the nervous system is an ongoing journey. While there is much I still do not know, this module provided a strong foundational understanding of the nervous system. I definitely struggled to keep up and grasp everything, but I can proudly and confidently say that I finished this module with greater insight and wisdom. I am especially grateful for the comprehensive lectures, cases, and practical laboratory activities that integrated the theoretical principles into practical activities. This module is surely one of the most challenging yet captivating lessons I will have in my medical journey.
