CONTEXT
The respiratory system is a vital biological system responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the environment. It includes organs such as the lungs, trachea, bronchi, and diaphragm, working together to facilitate breathing and maintain proper gas exchange in the body. This module tackles its gross anatomy, histological characteristics, physiological mechanisms, biochemical processes involved in gas exchange, regulation of respiration, as well as specific conditions like sports physiology, deep-sea diving, and hyperbaric conditions. Through this module, these objectives were achieved: clinical competence (PO1), effective communication (PO2), and collaboration (PO5).
EXPERIENCE
The pacing of the topics in this module was better and more manageable for me. Learning about the respiratory system amazed me as it showed how intricate breathing, a normally mindless task, actually is. Throughout the module, various activities were utilized in order to enhance our learnings such as lectures, small group discussions, video correlates, and laboratory exercises. Through laboratory exercises and other hands-on experiences, I was able to engage in practical activities that helped cultivate my theoretical knowledge (PO1). For instance, spirometry was done in our physiology laboratory class which helped me gain a deeper understanding of the physics and mechanics of breathing. Through our dynamic SGDs, this provided opportunities for me to nurture my communication skills (PO2). These interactions not only deepened my understanding of the respiratory system but also honed my ability to articulate complex concepts effectively. In addition, by actively participating in these activities and discussions which emphasized the importance of teamwork, we were able to collaborate with each other, sharing insights and collectively problem-solving (PO5).
REFLECTION
First, I realized the impact hands-on experiences have had on my overall understanding of the topic. It made concepts that were difficult to understand more tangible and practical. The use of real-world scenarios, such as sports physiology and deep-sea diving, in this module has also helped broaden my perspective on respiratory physiology. Second, looking back on my engagement during group discussions, I recognize the positive effect it has had on my communication skills. For this module, I tried to be more spontaneous. It was challenging at first, but it somehow enabled me to articulate complex concepts in a simpler and clearer manner. Lastly, through my collaborative experiences in this module, I learned about embracing diversity and harnessing the collective wisdom of others as it leads to approaches that are more creative, insightful, and unique.
ACTION
First, to further enhance my skills and knowledge, I plan on seeking out additional opportunities for hands-on experience, such as volunteering in clinical settings and engaging in self-study of laboratory classes. By actively engaging in these activities, I aim to expand my skill set and deepen my understanding of the respiratory system. Second, to refine my communication skills, I plan to seek more opportunities for me to engage in academic discussions and presentations. Additionally, I can ask feedback from peers and mentors to identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to enhance my clarity and coherence. Third, to foster a collaborative culture, I plan to seek out more activities and projects that promote teamwork and mutual respect. I also aim to keep an open-mind to others and learn from them as well.
EVALUATION
Overall, I am satisfied with my attitude and performance in this module. I have developed skills and knowledge that have helped me grasp the topic better. I have also demonstrated a proactive approach to my learning and tried my best to actively engage in all activities. While I recognize areas for improvement such as studying more on the physics and laws of breathing, I am committed to continuous learning. Moving forward, I will strive to maintain the same level of enthusiasm and dedication in the future modules as well as continue to grow through self-reflection into a competent healthcare professional.
