This respiratory system module built upon the foundational knowledge of normal anatomy, histology, physiology, and biochemistry that I acquired in Level I. It provided a comprehensive understanding of common diseases affecting the upper and lower respiratory tract, such as airway obstruction, pneumonia, and bronchial asthma. Moreover, the module incorporated an enhanced curriculum on tuberculosis (TB) control, aligning with the National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) to emphasize TB as both a medical and social issue. As a result, the following objectives were achieved: clinical competence (PO1), leadership skills (PO3), and the ability to utilize a systematic approach in medical practice (PO6).
Throughout this module, various learning strategies such as small group discussions (SGDs), interactive lectures, and laboratory procedures were employed to reinforce my understanding of respiratory diseases. First, the interactive lectures and SGDs significantly contributed to my clinical competence (PO1) by allowing me to engage in case discussions that deepened my grasp of disease mechanisms, diagnostic approaches, and treatment strategies. The laboratory sessions, particularly in microbiology, pathology, and parasitology, provided hands-on experience in diagnosing respiratory conditions, further solidifying my practical knowledge. Second, in addition to acquiring medical knowledge, I had the opportunity to develop my leadership skills (PO3) by leading an SGD case for this module. This experience challenged me to facilitate discussions effectively, ensuring that all group members contributed and understood the key aspects of the case. Being a leader required me to synthesize complex information and guide my peers toward evidence-based conclusions. Lastly, serving as the secretary for another SGD case strengthened my ability to document discussions systematically (PO6), ensuring that key learning points were accurately recorded.
First, this module deepened my appreciation for the complexity of respiratory diseases, particularly tuberculosis. Before this module, I primarily viewed TB as a clinical condition. However, learning about its epidemiological burden and public health implications made me realize the profound impact it has on individuals, families, and communities. Understanding TB as a social issue highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to disease control, encompassing patient education, government policies, and public health initiatives. Second, I also recognized the significance of a systematic approach in medical practice. Leading and documenting SGD discussions required me to think critically, organize information effectively, and ensure a structured problem-solving strategy. These skills are essential not only for academic success but also for future clinical practice, where patient cases must be assessed methodically to achieve accurate diagnoses and optimal management. Lastly, I realized the importance of preventive medicine. While treatment strategies for respiratory diseases are well-established, prevention through vaccination, public awareness, and early detection is crucial in reducing disease burden. This perspective reinforced my responsibility as a future physician to advocate for both individual patient care and broader public health initiatives.
First, I plan to deepen my understanding of respiratory diseases by engaging in further readings beyond the required materials. Looking into additional case discussions and seeking mentors will also help strengthen my diagnostic and management skills. Second, to improve my ability to lead group discussions, I aim to actively seek opportunities to facilitate more SGDs in future modules. Additionally, I will work on fostering a collaborative learning environment where all group members feel encouraged to participate and share insights. Lastly, I will refine my systematic approach to problem-solving by consistently practicing case analyses in a structured manner. Utilizing frameworks such as differential diagnoses, diagnostic algorithms, and treatment protocols will help me develop a more methodical approach to patient care.
EVALUATION
Overall, my performance in this module has been a valuable learning experience. I have gained confidence in my ability to apply clinical knowledge, collaborate with peers, and adopt a structured approach to medical problem-solving. However, I acknowledge that there is always room for growth. By actively working on my action plans, I can further refine my skills and contribute meaningfully to patient care and public health efforts. This module has reinforced my commitment to becoming a socially accountable physician, equipped not only with medical expertise but also with the awareness and responsibility to address public health challenges such as tuberculosis. Moving forward, I will continue to integrate these lessons into my medical education and future practice.
