CONTEXT
This module focuses on the integumentary system, specifically the skin and hair. The skin covers the entire external surface of the body and is considered the largest organ. It comprises three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. Hair, on the other hand, is a keratinous filament growing out of the epidermis. The anatomy and physiology of the skin and hair, along with their appendages, were explored through small group discussions and laboratory activities. Through this module, the following objectives were achieved: communication (PO#2), knowledge competency (PO1), teamwork (PO#5), and personal development (PO#7).
EXPERIENCE
During the small group discussions, we had two triggers related to the integumentary system. In our first meeting, we communicated our existing knowledge about the integumentary system (PO#2), and during the second meeting, we thoroughly discussed what we researched on about the skin and hair (PO#1). I initially struggled to keep up and internalize the discussion due to the exam we had that day and my lack of sleep. However, with the help of my groupmates who were able to explain the topic well in addition to our supplementary histology laboratory meetings, I gained a better understanding of the topic. This module also included a film showing and a reaction paper activity. Each member of our group shared their thoughts on the documentary "Death in Alaska" to contribute to our group output (PO#5) and tried to relate the video to our integumentary system lessons and our future careers as medical professionals (PO#7).
REFLECTION
First, I realized during our initial small group discussion meeting that I had forgotten many details about the integumentary system. Although I participated in the discussion, my knowledge was lacking. Second, I was able to learn more about the parts of the integumentary system as a result of our case synthesis and histology laboratory activity. I noticed that I understood the topic better when I actively listened to my groupmates during the small group discussion and independently reviewed the histology slides. Third, I believe that our success and perfect score in the group reaction paper was due to our teamwork, where we all shared insights on each guide question. Lastly, the documentary taught me the importance of collaborating with others in order to deliver effective patient care. Nurses, medical technologists, and other healthcare staff play essential roles in the healthcare team.
ACTION
First, I will dedicate more time to studying the integumentary system, focusing on my weaknesses, such as histology and anatomy. Second, I plan to improve my time-management skills to allow more time for advanced reading before small group discussions and enough rest, making it easier to follow the discussions. Lastly, as a student and a future doctor, I should learn to rely on others and resist the urge to do everything on my own. Developing a habit of collaboration will definitely benefit me now and in the future as I work with various healthcare professionals.
EVALUATION
Although this module was brief, the lectures, small group discussions, and video screening all contributed to my understanding of the integumentary system, its functions, and components. These activities also made me realize my knowledge gaps, helping me identify areas for improvement. Furthermore, it was through this module that I was able to better appreciate the importance of collaboration among different healthcare professionals. It is truly teamwork within the healthcare team that leads to successful and high-quality patient care.
