CONTEXT
Block II Module 2 tackles the basic principles of genetics and heredity. It explores how genes are inherited, expressed, and how they contribute to the traits and characteristics of living organisms. It also tackles the function and biochemistry of nucleotides and nucleic acids. This module incorporated two cases and four videos involving the fundamentals of genetics as well as new gene editing technologies such as CRISPR-Cas9 which enables geneticists and medical researchers to remove, add, or alter sections of a DNA sequence in a genome. As a result, this module was able to achieve the following objectives: teamwork (PO5), communication (PO2), lifelong learning (PO7), and social accountability (PO10).
EXPERIENCE
During our small group discussion (SGD), we were able to share our knowledge about various aspects of genetics such as DNA & RNA, their synthesis, replication, transcription, and translation as well as repair mechanisms (PO5). Despite the complexities of genetics and its biochemistry, we were able to relay our ideas effectively and in a manner that was understood (PO2) which amazed me as I realized how big of a role genetics plays in medicine. In addition, through our video showing and podcast making, we were able to learn more about genetic advancements which could lead to better treatments for patients (PO7). However, with this new knowledge comes questions to ponder on regarding the ethical dilemmas that come with genetic manipulation (PO10).
REFLECTION
First, when it comes to deciphering complex cases or discussing the impact of genetics on the medical field, I realized that effective teamwork among members of the healthcare team is critical. For example, when it comes to analyzing a patient's genetic material in relation to disease, having various clinicians share their knowledge and understanding of the disease mechanisms and other diagnostic insights can help tailor medical treatments on a genetic level. Second, I learned the significance of developing the ability to simplify complex information. Genetics is no easy topic; thus, being able to understand and simplify information will help create a good foundation of knowledge. Moreover, in relation to our future patients, being able to communicate in a way they understand ensures that they are able to comprehend the implications of testing, diagnosis, and treatment, so that they can make well-informed decisions about their health. Third, I learned the significance of genetics as it plays a pivotal role in the medical field. It impacts the way we understand health, disease, and patient care. Lastly, I realized that these genetic advancements come with a responsibility as medical professionals to use the technology wisely and ethically, keeping in mind our patient’s best interest.
ACTION
First, collaboration and effective learning environments can be fostered as I do my small group discussions or study groups by actively participating with my fellow groupmates as well as encouraging everyone to share their insights and knowledge. Asking my mentor or facilitator for help with difficult topics is also something I can do. Second, I can practice my communication skills by engaging in simulated patient encounters in order to help me convey complex information with empathy and clarity. I can also do peer teaching where I explain difficult topics such as genetics to my friends which can not only improve my communication skills but also my understanding of the topic. Third, in order to cultivate a curious mind and a commitment to lifelong learning, I can create a personalized learning plan wherein I allocate time in a week to read more about my lessons. I can also set specific, measurable, and time-bound learning goals in terms of genetics. Lastly, as early as now, I can start developing an ethical mindset wherein I reflect about how my actions can affect others, so that in the future, I can make better decisions especially when it comes to my patients.
EVALUATION
This module has been full of insight as it served as an introduction to the world of genetics. Genetics with its complexities has become a vital foundation of modern medicine. It offers insight into disease risk, treatment optimization, and effective diagnosis. I have definitely learned a lot. To close, with the expanding knowledge of genetics and continuous learning, we can not only advance medicine, optimize therapeutic outcomes, and minimize adverse effects but also empower our healthcare workers to deliver more personalized care.
