CONTEXT
This module tackled the digestive system encompassing its anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, as well as nutrition. The digestive system is a complex network of organs responsible for processing food and extracting nutrients essential for the body's functioning. On the other hand, nutrition is the process of obtaining and utilizing nutrients from food to support the body's growth, maintenance, and health. Through this module, the following objectives were achieved: demonstrate clinical competence (PO1), collaboration (PO5), and utilization of a systems based approach (PO6).
EXPERIENCE
Throughout the module, numerous activities aimed at deepening our understanding of the digestive system were conducted. Interactive lectures, laboratory sessions, and tutorials were provided to enhance our knowledge (PO1). However, I found myself struggling to internalize all the material within the given time. The pacing of the module seemed unbalanced, with some quizzes being heavier compared to others. Despite my best efforts to cope, the sheer volume of material was overwhelming at times, resulting in diminished overall comprehension and retention of the topic. On a more positive note, I really enjoyed the nutrition practicum we had. As a group, we prepared a meal plan for a given case, which tested our teamwork as we brainstormed different menus and applied what we had learned from our lectures and SGD cases (PO5). To ensure efficiency, we assigned specific tasks to each person and tried to be systematic in our food preparation and cooking (PO6), ultimately leading to a successful nutrition practicum.
REFLECTION
First, I realized that the digestive system, encompassing its anatomy, physiological functions, and biochemical processes, along with the fundamentals of nutrition, is a highly intricate field that required me to develop new methods of studying and retaining information in a more effective way. Despite its complexity, I recognize that comprehending all of this is crucial for understanding clinical conditions, developing clinical insights, and making correlations in the future. Second, despite my struggle to fully grasp the topic, the collaborative nature of certain activities, such as the nutrition practicum, helped me build camaraderie and teamwork. The collective effort to craft a cohesive meal plan for a given case not only tested my knowledge but also fostered effective communication and coordination among the group. Lastly, I learned the importance of being systematic in one’s work. The nutrition practicum, with its time limit and hectic environment in the lab, could have resulted in disaster if it were not for our task designations and willingness to assist one another.
ACTION PLAN
First, I intend to break down the module material into more manageable chunks in the future and set realistic goals to mitigate feelings of overwhelm and enhance comprehension. Additionally, I plan to adopt a more proactive approach to learning, incorporating techniques such as concept mapping, mnemonic devices, and peer discussions to internalize lessons more effectively. Second, I aim to further develop my relationships with my groupmates by setting aside our differences and getting to know each other better. This will foster a culture of mutual support and group synergy, which are essential for future projects or SGDs. Lastly, I plan to maintain a systematic approach to my academics and personal life. This attitude of organization and efficiency will contribute to my growth as a professional in the future.
EVALUATION
While the module's pace presented challenges for me, it also served as a catalyst for growth and self-discovery. Reflecting on my attitude, despite my struggle, I chose to be resilient and determined, which helped me develop a mentality of adaptability and perseverance in the face of adversity. In terms of my performance, I recognize areas where I could improve, particularly in managing time and optimizing study strategies. However, by embracing collaboration, systematic approaches, and more proactive learning strategies, I am confident that in the coming modules, I can navigate the complexities of the topic much better.
