CONTEXT
This module tackled the cardiovascular system and covered the etiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, pathophysiology, pathologic findings, complications, diagnostic workup, and management of cardiovascular diseases. By integrating disciplines such as pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, and physical diagnosis into small group discussions, laboratory exercises, and lectures, the module successfully achieved the following objectives: clinical competence (PO1), collaboration (PO5), and continuous learning and personal growth (PO7).
EXPERIENCE
This module was the hardest one I have had this year. Coming back from break, it was difficult for me to switch back to the fast-paced schedule. The three weeks felt way too short to fully absorb everything, and I felt so overwhelmed. However, I reminded myself that doing my best mattered more than striving for perfection, and this helped me push through.
The lectures, SGD cases, and lab sessions really helped me build clinical competence (PO1). The lectures provided a solid foundation for theoretical knowledge, such as understanding how cardiovascular diseases happen and progress. The SGDs allowed us to practice applying this knowledge to real-life situations, while laboratory sessions helped bridge the gap between theory and practical tests. Teamwork (PO5) was a big part of this module, especially during SGDs. Working with my classmates to solve clinical cases made me realize how important it is to listen to different ideas and communicate clearly. These discussions showed me how collaboration helps us all learn better and work toward shared goals. Finally, the module pushed me to grow not just in knowledge but also in character (PO7). It was hard to keep going when I felt unprepared, but I learned to be kind to myself and focus on small steps forward. This experience taught me to be resilient and persevere, which are qualities I will carry with me throughout medical school and beyond.
REFLECTION
First, I recognize that the combination of lectures, SGDs, and lab sessions provided me the tools to understand cardiovascular diseases and think critically about their diagnosis and treatment. I learned that analyzing diagnostic test results required not just knowledge but also the ability to connect it to patient symptoms and conditions. Second, I realized that discussing cases with classmates made me appreciate the value of teamwork in solving complex problems. It was not always easy as sometimes we had different opinions, but these challenges helped me grow as a team player and communicator. Lastly, I realized that real growth comes from pushing through struggles. By staying committed and giving myself grace throughout this module, I developed resilience and the confidence to keep improving. These lessons go beyond academics and will shape the kind of doctor I want to become.
ACTION
First, I plan to improve my time management by creating a better study schedule. Breaking content into smaller chunks will help me stay on track and avoid feeling overwhelmed. Second, I aim to always remind myself that it is okay to struggle and that taking breaks is part of staying healthy and productive. I also plan on reflecting on my progress after every module to identify what is working and what needs improvement. Lastly, I aim to incorporate active learning techniques, such as summarizing key concepts in my own words and teaching them to others, to enhance my understanding and retention of the material.
EVALUATION
Overall, I am proud of how I handled this challenging module. Even though it was tough, I stayed committed and tried my best. I have grown a lot in terms of resilience, teamwork, and learning to be kinder to myself. Still, I know there is room for improvement. By following my action plans, I am confident that I will continue improving my skills and mindset. Thus, this module not only taught me about the cardiovascular system but also showed me the value of perseverance, collaboration, and self-compassion. It was hard, but it helped me grow both as a student and as a person. I am grateful for the experience and the lessons it brought, and I will carry them with me as I move forward in my journey.
