CONTEXT
This module tackles pediatric history taking. Pediatric history taking involves gathering information about various components crucial to diagnosis such as a child's medical history, developmental milestones, and current health concerns. It also aims to establish rapport and address both present concerns and factors affecting the child's health and well-being. During this module, the following objectives were achieved: demonstrating clinical competence (PO1), effective communication (PO2), and utilizing a systematic approach (PO6).
EXPERIENCE
Learning about pediatric history taking was a fun yet challenging experience for me. I had no background on this lesson during my pre-med, but after finishing this module, I have definitely learned a lot. Various activities were undertaken to achieve the program outcomes such as interactive lectures and practice sessions with feedback. Each activity aimed to enhance our ability to gather relevant information in history taking (PO1). Effective communication skills were also emphasized in history taking through the use of easy to understand language and techniques in order to foster trust and rapport with the child or guardian (PO2). Additionally, with the use of the step-by-step guide, I was able to employ a systematic approach to organize inquiries chronologically, ensuring no pertinent details were overlooked (PO6).
REFLECTION
First, I realized that taking pediatric history requires more than just technical proficiency. It involves understanding the unique aspects of pediatric medicine, such as developmental stages, age-appropriate communication, and the role of caregivers and parents in providing medical history. Second, I learned that effective communication is crucial when interacting with pediatric patients and their families. Children may have limited verbal abilities or may feel anxious during medical encounters. Therefore, employing age-appropriate language, active listening, and non-verbal cues are essential for building trust and rapport. Furthermore, communicating effectively with caregivers allows for a better understanding of the child's medical history, concerns, and family dynamics. Lastly, I learned that organizing the history taking process in a systematic way is most efficient and effective when it comes to collecting information. By following a structured framework, it ensures that no important details are overlooked and that the history taking is thorough.
ACTION
First, I plan on engaging in more role-playing exercises and practice sessions, seeking opportunities to practice pediatric history taking under supervision to further refine my skills. Second, I aim to actively seek out additional resources, such as pediatric textbooks and online tutorials, to deepen my knowledge of pediatric interactions and refine my history taking techniques. Lastly, I plan to continually seek feedback from peers and mentors on my history taking skills, actively incorporating constructive criticism to enhance my performance.
EVALUATION
In conclusion, the module on pediatric history taking has been a valuable learning experience for me as it provides essential knowledge and skills needed for clinical practice. Evaluating my attitude and performance in the module, I recognize my strengths and weaknesses. I was excited to learn something new and saw my mistakes as opportunities for growth. However, I still need to develop my mastery of the history taking procedure as well as my communication skills. With everything that I have learned, I am confident that I am better equipped to do pediatric history taking in the future.
