CONTEXT
This module was about the cardiovascular system. The circulatory system, comprising the heart, blood vessels, and blood, serves as the cornerstone of human physiology, as it serves to distribute vital nutrients and oxygen, as well as facilitate waste removal throughout the body. The module delved into the anatomy, histology, embryology, and physiology of the heart and blood vessels. As a result, the following objectives were achieved: demonstrate clinical competence (PO1), lead and manage the group (PO3), and collaboration (PO5).
EXPERIENCE
This module was challenging yet interesting for me. First, our discussion of the cardiovascular system utilized a multifaceted approach wherein SGD cases, lectures, video correlates, and laboratory sessions were done in order to gain a deeper understanding of the topic (PO1). Second, I was able to lead the last SGD case in which we had our module quiz prior to that synthesis meeting. Despite our tired energies, I tried my best to keep the group motivated and the discussion flowing (PO3). Third, I think that one of the biggest reasons why I was able to enjoy the module despite its difficulty was because of our SGD facilitator, Dr. Bael. She played a big role when it came to our learnings, because she would really give us genuine guidance and clarity whenever we were confused about certain principles or processes. She would also add key notes that we missed in order to enhance our discussions. She is definitely my favorite SGD facilitator so far. Additionally, we were able to have fruitful discussions during each case as everyone shared what they knew regarding the topic in terms of the rhythmic contractions of cardiac muscle, regulation of blood pressure, hemodynamics, and more (PO5).
REFLECTION
First, I realized how complex the cardiovascular system is. I definitely struggled with internalizing some topics; however, being able to truly understand the sophisticated mechanisms and regulations governing this system not only helped me lay foundational knowledge for the coming lessons but also helped me develop a deeper appreciation for the complexities of human anatomy and physiology. Each aspect of the module, from laboratory classes to the small group discussions, has allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios and serves as a starting point to honing my future clinical and diagnostic skills. Second, my journey through the module has given me more opportunities to go beyond my comfort zone to lead and manage groups during my SGDs as well as helped me learn new ways of approach when it comes to discussions and motivating my group members. Lastly, I realized that struggling through difficult topics as a group makes it less discouraging. We engaged in group discussions, leveraging each other's strengths to enhance our collective understanding of the module. Furthermore, by sharing each of our difficulties, we were able to relate with one another, provide mutual support, and enhance our learning experiences.
ACTION
First, I aim to put more effort into making the most out of the course materials provided as the modules become more complex. Time-management is still something that I struggle with, but being able to utilize our classes and correlates to the fullest will help boost my holistic understanding of lessons, allowing me to better navigate future topics with confidence. Second, I plan on volunteering more often during SGDs in order to develop my leadership and group management skills. I believe that there is still room for improvement; thus, I aim to take more risks to overcome my shyness. Lastly, I hope to be more open about my weaknesses to others as well as further develop a growth mindset. For instance, sharing my struggles with certain topics helps me stay humble as well as possibly help others feel less discouraged. In addition, having a growth mindset helps me stay motivated and committed to lifelong learning.
EVALUATION
As this module comes to a close, the journey of learning about the intricacies of the cardiovascular system has been both humbling and enlightening. Evaluating my attitude and performance throughout the module, I acknowledge the efforts I have made in identifying my weaknesses and embracing new opportunities for growth. In addition, by developing a growth mindset, I am slowly building a foundation upon which I can continue to thrive in my academic and professional journeys. Thus, with the growing difficulty in the coming modules, I hope to stay focused on my purpose and to internalize all that I can as I continue to pursue the path towards clinical competence, lifelong learning, and humility.
