INTRODUCTION (Context)
The module focused on research methodology. In our study, we will utilize a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to assess the in vivo neurotoxic effects of microplastics on nerve conduction. Specifically, the study will involve 32 mice, with eight mice per group. The four groups include: a control group treated with distilled water and groups exposed to low, medium, and high doses of microplastic solutions. All groups will undergo treatment for 21 days, with ad libitum access to the solutions. The learning activities centered around understanding research methodologies, designing procedures, collaborating within the group, and ensuring ethical considerations in research. Through group discussions, literature reviews, and practical planning sessions, I engaged deeply in the research process. As a result, the following outcomes were achieved: engaging in research activities (PO4), collaboration (PO5), applying a systematic approach (PO6), and adhering to ethical standards (PO8).
BODY (Experience, Reflection, Action)
During the activities, I experienced a range of emotions, from excitement to anxiety. Designing the study allowed me to immerse myself in the research process (PO4), which was both exhilarating and daunting. Engaging with my members in group discussions and brainstorming sessions fostered a collaborative spirit that was invaluable (PO5). Together, we meticulously planned the experimental design and procedures, discussing various dosages and their potential impacts on nerve conduction (PO6). Since our study involved mice, we also ensured that our methodology was ethical and that the data we collected would contribute to a better understanding of environmental health risks (PO8).
This module has fundamentally shaped my understanding of research design and methodology. Selecting an RCT for this study was guided by its strength in establishing cause-and-effect relationships, which is crucial for addressing our research problem (PO4). The systematic approach we will adopt, from defining the hypothesis to executing our experiment, highlighted the importance of each step in the research process (PO6). Additionally, I recognized the necessity of developing a diverse skill set to solve our research problem effectively. Key skills include critical thinking, data analysis, and effective communication within the team. Engaging in this collaborative environment has taught me the value of diverse perspectives in enriching the research process (PO5). Moreover, I learned that ethics review and anti-plagiarism measures are essential components of any research project. These practices not only uphold the integrity of the research but also ensure that the rights and welfare of the subjects involved are protected (PO8). These ethical considerations safeguard both the researchers and the scientific community, fostering trust and accountability.
I will apply what I have learned by further refining my research skills through participation in more case studies and practical exercises. This will involve enhancing my ability to summarize research findings, develop hypotheses, and synthesize data into coherent analyses. I also aim to be more proactive in group discussions, especially when offering insights about our research methodology. I intend to seek out opportunities for hands-on research experience, such as internships or conferences, which will allow me to gain practical skills and deepen my understanding of the subject matter. Additionally, I plan to attend workshops on ethical standards in research to reinforce these critical aspects further.
CONCLUSION (Evaluation)
Evaluating my performance and attitude throughout this module, I feel a sense of pride in my progress. The experience solidified my understanding of the importance of a well-thought-out research design, systematic procedures, and ethical considerations in conducting research. Engaging in collaborative efforts enhanced my learning and demonstrated the power of collective insight in tackling complex scientific problems. The lessons I learned about critical thinking, collaboration, and ethical responsibility are invaluable as I continue my academic journey. Overall, this module has been instrumental in shaping my approach to research, highlighting the importance of maintaining integrity and rigor in scientific inquiry. As I reflect on the knowledge gained, I am motivated to carry these lessons forward, ensuring that my future work contributes positively to the scientific community while upholding the highest ethical standards.
