CONTEXT
This module was about infectious diseases. It was designed to provide us with a comprehensive understanding of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, management, and prevention of infectious diseases that are commonly encountered in our setting. Over the span of the module, we were exposed to multiple teaching-learning activities such as lecturettes, small group discussions, laboratory sessions in microbiology and parasitology, and examinations. The main goal was to prepare us to become competent physicians who can approach infectious diseases systematically and holistically. As a result, the following outcomes were achieved: demonstrating clinical competence (PO1), collaboration (PO5), and utilizing a systematic approach (PO6).
EXPERIENCE
From the very beginning, it was clear to me that this would be the heaviest and hardest module so far. Infectious diseases cover such a broad range of conditions, and the amount of material presented in such a short span of time was overwhelming. I often found myself struggling to keep up with the lectures and readings, and I honestly had difficulty fully grasping everything. Even passing the examinations was a challenge for me, which left me frustrated at times. Despite this, I cannot deny how much I learned.
First, clinical competence was developed through the lectures that provided us with solid foundations on the epidemiology and pathophysiology of various infections, and the laboratory activities that allowed me to connect theoretical knowledge to practical application, especially in microbiology and parasitology (PO1). Second, the small group discussions were another highlight. Although they required a lot of preparation, they encouraged active participation and collaboration with my groupmates (PO5). Lastly, the use of concept mapping was particularly helpful in organizing complex ideas, and it allowed us to see how different aspects of a disease, from etiology to prevention, fit together systematically. The fact that I also had to adjust my study style in order to fit the time and demands of this module showed my systematic approach (PO6).
Still, I feel that the time frame was too short to fully internalize all this knowledge. Nonetheless, I recognize how the intensity of this module forced me to adapt, prioritize, and push through difficulties, which are skills I know I will need as a future physician.
REFLECTION
First, I recognize that although I struggled with retaining everything, I was able to appreciate how important it is to identify the key signs and symptoms of infectious diseases and connect them to possible diagnoses. This competence is not built overnight, but the module gave me a strong foundation to build on. Second, I realized that in medicine, learning is rarely a solitary endeavor. There were moments when I was confused or unsure, but working with my groupmates helped clarify things. Exchanging ideas, explaining concepts to one another, and piecing things together as a group showed me the value of teamwork—not just for academics, but also for patient care in the future. Third, I learned that even though I often felt overwhelmed by the volume of information, applying a structured way of thinking helped me regain some control over the material. I may not have mastered everything, but I learned the importance of approaching clinical problems step by step.
ACTION
First, I need to improve my study strategies. Instead of trying to memorize every detail, I should focus on understanding core principles and using them as anchors when studying specific diseases. Second, I want to be more intentional in collaborative learning. I often rely on myself, but this module showed me how much I can gain from my peers. I plan to engage more actively in group activities, not just to learn from others, but also to contribute what I can. Lastly, I want to strengthen my ability to use systematic approaches in problem-solving. To do this, I will practice building differential diagnoses whenever possible and keep refining my clinical reasoning step by step, instead of panicking when faced with too much information.
EVALUATION
Evaluating my performance and attitude during this module, I would describe it as a mix of struggle and growth. On one hand, I acknowledge that I was not at my best in terms of exam performance and retention of material. On the other hand, I am proud that I did not give up despite the difficulty. I showed persistence, I engaged in the activities, and I made the effort to learn even when it felt overwhelming. My attitude was not always perfect. I had moments of frustration and self-doubt, but I consider this module as a humbling experience that reminded me of the importance of discipline, resilience, and teamwork. This module may have been the hardest so far, but it was also one of the most formative. It tested not only my knowledge but also my character and habits as a student. While I still have a lot to work on, I believe the challenges I face here will help me grow into a more competent, resilient, and compassionate future physician.
