CONTEXT
The Medical Perspectives course encompassed key areas of study such as the History of Medicine, Basic Medical Ethics, and Professionalism. This module also integrated videos that offered thought-provoking ideas on a doctor’s dilemma and the embodiment of professionalism. Furthermore, it tackled cases for discussion namely “Ka-berks” and “Upload”, which were designed to explore ethical considerations and legal implications in medicine. Through Medical Perspectives, we researched on the history of medical interventions (PO4), discussed our ideas on how to uphold professionalism as a student and as aspiring physicians (PO2), learned about the code of ethics and data privacy act (PO8), and demonstrate ethical decision making through our Small Group Discussions (PO1).
EXPERIENCE
For this course, we made an infographic about Filipino Folk medicine. Researching on the different traditional Filipino medical practitioners such as the albularyo and manghihilot together with their way of practice made me realize how interesting medicine is in our culture. People have different takes on healing and research made me appreciate their uniqueness. For our small group discussion, our first case was about forgery while our second case was about patient privacy and consent. Each member discussed different ways we as students could demonstrate professionalism such as respecting the cadavers & specimens and coming to class on time. We also made suggestions on how to practice professionalism as physicians, guided by the code of ethics and laws, such as respecting patient’s privacy and autonomy as well as being empathetic and compassionate. Through these cases and the discussions, it made me contemplate my own moral and professional compass. Would I ever compromise my principles for the sake of friends? Could my emotions potentially obscure my judgment in the future? Honestly, I really think there would be times that I would fall short, and that makes me feel guilty. However, this course inspires me to refine my thought processes and strengthen my values especially when it comes to making ethical decisions.
REFLECTION
First, I realized the importance of knowing about the history of medicine as it provides context to the cultural, ethical, and societal beliefs that shaped medical practices as well as gives inspiration to current and future medical professionals on healthcare innovations. Second, I learned the importance of having professional, ethical, and legal codes of conduct that serve as the cornerstones of medical practice. As doctors, we must always remember to put our patients first amidst inevitable ethical dilemmas; hence, being guided by these standards ensures that our practice gives patients the quality healthcare they deserve. One of the lines from our lecture that exemplifies this is that we must not just do what is permissible, but what is best for our patient. Through these experiences, I noticed that learning medical ethics and professionalism is an enlightening yet challenging task for me.
ACTION
Applying medical ethics and professionalism as well as utilizing my knowledge on the history of medicine are not just lessons that can be used in the future. These lessons can extend to the present and shape who I am even as a student. I can uphold professionalism by dressing appropriately, arriving on time in class, listening to my lecturers, showing respect to the people I meet everyday, and keeping confidentiality with the patients I meet. As I face different problems, I plan to become a person who carefully considers my options, who thinks about the consequences of each action, and reflects on my morals. Moreover, I plan to use my knowledge on the code of ethics and data privacy to be a more responsible online user when it comes to social media, especially when it involves online discussions and sharing of confidential information.
EVALUATION
In conclusion, the course Medical Perspectives is relevant and significant to me as a student as it instills the skills and values that shape me into a well-rounded individual who not only has a deeper understanding of the field, but also commits to a journey of introspection, upholding ethical standards, and providing the best possible care for patients. The activities have allowed me to realize some flaws within my behaviors and thoughts that need to be improved upon through introspection. As I go through my medical journey, I hope to make decisions that uphold the kind of physician and professional I want to be in the future.
