Q. How do I enroll my child in the Extended Day Program for the upcoming school year?
A. Kindergarten EDP registration forms are emailed home in early February. Registration forms for students entering grades 1-6 are emailed home in mid to late February via the school Principal's weekly emails.
Q. How do I enroll my child in the Extended Day Program once the school year has started?
A. Please send an email to the Director, Tayler Bodio tbodio@ashland.k12.ma.us.
Q. What are EDP’s after school hours of operation?
A. EDP is open from school dismissal until 6:00 PM and on most early release days.
PROCEDURE FOR MISSING THE 6:00 P.M. DISMISSAL TIME
1. We will begin contacting the people listed on the authorization form in order to locate someone who may be able to pick up your child.
2. If no one can be contacted within 30 minutes, it may be necessary for the staff to contact the Ashland Police.
3. The second time a late pick-up occurs, the parent will be charged a late fee of $1.00 per minute for each minute that has elapsed after the dismissal time.
NOTE: We will do everything in our power to avoid severe action in the case of a late pickup. Please help us by: calling if you have an unavoidable emergency, providing responsible people on your authorization form, and most of all, by thinking of your child. A child left behind when everyone has gone home feels terribly alone.
Q. Where is EDP located?
A. Kindergarten EDP is held at the Pittaway School. Attendance is taken at the Warren School at dismissal by an EDP teacher and an aide. The teacher puts the kindergarten students on the bus, and they ride down the hill to the Pittaway School. Another EDP teacher takes them off the bus and takes attendance a second time. EDP for 1st and 2nd graders is held at the Warren School. EDP for grades 3 through 6 is held at the Mindess School. Sixth graders ride the bus over to the Mindess School at dismissal.
Q. Do you have a Before School program?
A. Yes, the Breakfast Bunch opens at 7:00 a.m. Breakfast Bunch for K-2 is held at the Warren School.
Q. Do I need to call my child in if they are going to be absent?
A. Yes. You must call (508) 239-8816 (Mindess EDP), (508) 239-9251 (Warren EDP), (508) 283-8808 (Pittaway EDP) and leave a message notifying us of your child’s absence. An alternate method is to email the respective program your child attends. The school is not responsible for notifying us of absences, and notes to the teacher often do not make it to EDP.
Q. Is EDP open during school vacations or snow days?
A. EDP is not open on legal holidays, school holidays, or when the school is closed due to inclement weather. If school is closed early because of inclement weather, the Extended Day Program will not be held. Per the policy of the Ashland Public Schools, the students will be transported home on their regular bus with the other students. If there is a delay in the opening of school in the morning, the Breakfast Bunch will not be held. If the weather situation is such that the regular school day can be completed but the forecast is for deteriorating conditions, the staff will contact all parents and request that they pick up their child/children by the emergency closing time, or we will begin contacting the people listed on your "Authorization Form." It would be helpful if parents have a "back-up" system if they know they will be away from a telephone on the day in question. Please note that refunds will not be made for snow days.
Q. What should I do if my child needs to take medication while at EDP?
A. If your child has an allergy or other medical issue, it is essential that we have all of the details in writing. If your child is being medicated, you should arrange with the school nurse to provide the child's treatment before he/she comes to the program, if possible. Other requests for medication will be discussed on an individual, case-by-case basis. In the event that your child will need medication while at the EDP, the following steps must be taken:
1. Get consent of the program to administer medication.
2. Prescription medications must be in the original container and have prescribing physician's name and phone number, and must be clearly labeled with the child's name and directions for administration.
3. Parents must complete an "Authorization to Administer Medication" form or send a note from home on the first day with all pertinent information. When you pick up your child that day, you must fill out a form for subsequent days.
4. It is the responsibility of the parents to make sure their child's medication is taken home at the end of the day.
NOTE: We are unable to administer non-prescription medication (ex: Benadryl) unless accompanied by a physician's note.
Q. Do I need to send in a snack/drink?
A. No. Snacks and drinks are provided. Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle labeled with their name.
Q. Can my child bring in toys/stuffed animals from home?
A. We do not allow toys/electronics from home at EDP. On occasion, the students might earn a special activity allowing them to bring home toys and a note will be sent home with the details.
