Autumn 1: Explorers
Summer 2: Comparing Wood Green With Another Location
Summer 1: Flight
Launch day - 23.04.2025
Year 2 soared into the History of Flight! First we presented our individual homework projects and explained what we learnt, how we made our projects and who helped us. We then continued on by learning about early flight attempts, exploring what led people to be curious about flight and how people used different materials and methods to try to take to the skies. Next, we met some of the pioneers of flight such as the Montgolfier Brothers who launched the first hot air balloon in 1783, Otto Lilienthal, who built and flew the first successful glider in 1891 and of course, the Wright brothers, who made history in 1903 with the first powered aeroplane flight. To bring history to life, we held a role-play interview with the Wright brothers! After this, the children were challenged with a game of ‘Guess who?’ We read out statements and the children worked in groups to hold up the picture of which aviator/inventor the statement was about.
Spring 2: A Local Study
Launch day - 24.02.2025
We started our day by showcasing our homework projects. Everyone presented interviews, diagrams, and even dioramas that explored various aspects of Wood Green. These projects set the stage for our deeper investigation into our local area. After sharing our work, we headed out on a guided local walk. During the walk, we observed the vibrant mix of human features—like busy high streets, shops, and transport links—as well as natural physical features such as parks, trees, and green spaces. With keen observational skills, the children counted the number of banks, train and bus stations and other notable spots in the area which they later shared their findings. Upon returning, the children drew and labelled pictures of four places they remembered from the walk. We then dived into the fascinating history of Wood Green which was once called Wood Leigh and discovered it once only had 10 houses and 50 residents!
Spring 1: London's Burning
Launch day - 08.01.2025
Year 2 began their journey into 1666 with an exciting launch day full of creativity and discovery. The children showcased incredible projects, explored life in the 17th century, and delved into Samuel Pepys' diary to track the fire's timeline. They mapped the fire’s devastating journey, role-played firefighting methods, and even rebuilt London with safer materials. Through interactive games and art, they experienced the drama of the Great Fire while developing their historical skills. The day was a roaring success, sparking curiosity and excitement for the term ahead!
Autumn 2: Pole to Pole
Launch day - 04.11.2024
After sharing our amazing projects with the class, the children shared some learning and key facts about the Arctic and Antarctica. Using this new knowledge, we made a quiz and tested the rest of the class on what they learned. Since so much of our new topic involves understanding globes and maps, we did a mapping exercise, explored the school making lists of what we could include in a map before drawing these ourselves. We made sure that what we included was permanent and included in our map’s key. We then looked at globes and how the climate changes as you move around it and what this would mean for plants and animals in each region before finishing the day with a polar art project.
Autumn 1: Explorers
Launch day - 04.09.2024
Year 2 had a spectacular time sharing their research all about explorers. We had projects varying from posters, dioramas and even fact files. We were super impressed to see how much they had learned.
Throughout the day, we learnt about a range of explorers and even did a scavenger hunt to identify three key explorers; Bessie Coleman, Mae Jeminson and Matthew Henson. One of which we even interviewed!
We recapped continents and seas, packed our explorer backpacks and of course remembered the essentials (water, tools and spare underwear). All of the explorers showed us how pushing ourselves could end up changing the world!
Summer 1: Flight
Launch day- 16.04.2024
For Launch day, Year 2 learned all about the invention of flight and how it has impacted the way we travel now. We learnt about different aviators like Bessie Coleman, Amelia Earhart and the inventors of the first aeroplane, the Wright brothers!
Spring 2: A Local Study of Wood Green
Launch day- 19.02.2024
Year 2 started our new topic about our local area, Wood Green. We started the day by going for a walk through Wood Green, locating stations, bus stops, cafes, libraries, etc. We then spent the day thinking back to what we saw on our walk, drawing different places that we saw. We then drew symbols on a map of Wood Green, locating all the different locations within Wood Green.
Spring 1: London's Burning
Launch day- 10.01.2024
The Great Fire of London has created great excitement in Year 2. Over the holidays, the children (with some additional adult help) completed their projects and returned to school with lots of knowledge on the Great Fire. This has led to interesting and informative discussions surrounding how it started and why it spread so quickly. As we go through the half term we will be looking at the fires' lasting effects. This will be further helped by our workshop at the end of January.
Autumn 2: Pole to Pole
Launch day- 30.10.23
Year 2s’ new topic is Pole to Pole. We were so impressed with the quality and quantity of projects that we received after the half term. We were also impressed with the research the children had done to create their project which was evident when they spoke to the class. During the day we looked at the geography of the Arctic, the animals that lived there and how they survive. We then looked at a corresponding country, Kenya. We discussed the different landscapes found in Kenya and the animals that live there. We also started to look at animal habitats and why animals are found in one environment and not in others.
The children are really excited about this topic and have continued doing research at home and sharing this with the class.
