PSHE & RSE

PSHE & RSE Curriculum Intent

Noel Park’s combined PSHE and RSE curriculum places a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing physical and mental health so that our children can become healthy, secure, independent and responsible members of society. We aim to equip our children with relevant and meaningful content that provides awareness of health, relationships, wellbeing and economic matters which arise on a personal, local, national and international level. With an ever changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive and meaningful role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community.  In doing so, this helps to develop their sense of self-worth and confidence, empowering them to influence and engage with those around them.

Sequencing and Progression

RSE teaching is incorporated into our PSHE long term planning, allowing for closely matched skills, knowledge and understanding to be taught together. RSE is delivered in a manner that is wholly appropriate for the child’s stage and age and follows the statutory requirements set out in the National Curriculum. Our RSE curriculum allows children to be able to build and maintain positive relationships and explore attitudes, values and skills that will empower them to make positive decisions about their own health and wellbeing, now and in the future.

What does PSHE look like at Noel Park?

PSHE is taught weekly as a whole class, discussion based lesson. Across the school, our themes of Family and Relationships, Health and Wellbeing, Safety, Citizenship and Economic Wellbeing are taught in every year group over the course of the year. The curriculum map illustrates how each of these strands progresses throughout each key stage as pupils grow and mature. Our programme aims to offer a broad and balanced range of learning opportunities which allow pupils to foster independence, respect, resilience and open mindedness. Links to these themes are developed through key stage and whole school assemblies and are underpinned by our values and everything we do at Noel Park.

EEDI is embedded throughout our curriculum, with a dedicated lesson at the start of each unit of PSHE to further develop a culture of embracing and celebrating our differences and similarities.

PSHE in Early Years

In the Early Years, PSHE is embedded across the curriculum and taught through a variety of practical and engaging adult-led and child-initiated activities, both inside the classroom and outside. The focus of the children's learning in Early Years on building positive friendships and the importance of keeping safe, as well as how to care for each other and the environment. Through PSHE, they explore and discover the world and the people around them and begin to develop an understanding of their role within it.

PSHE in Key Stage 1

From Key Stage 1 onwards, our curriculum is divided into five themes: Family and Relationships; Health and Wellbeing; Safety; Citizenship; and Economic Wellbeing. Each of these themes has an important role to play in preparing our pupils for the future. Over the course of their time at Noel Park, the children's knowledge and understanding is developed as they move through the school, allowing them to become positive, global citizens of the 21st century who are reflective of and knowledgable about the world around them and want to make the world a better place for all.  Our curriculum has been created to reflect the needs of our pupils and our community and is tailored to meet specific needs.

PSHE in Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, children continue to develop their oracy skills and confidence in speaking to further alongside their knowledge and understanding of the 5 key areas of the PSHE curriculum. Lessons are designed to be pupil-led and discussion based, giving the children opportunities to explore, debate, reflect and challenge both their own and others' ideas. A range of opportunities throughout the year, such as our termly careers months, bikeability sessions and workshops led by outside agencies such as the Breck Foundation, allow pupils to further reflect and build on their learning and apply it to real life contexts. PSHE, personal development and children’s wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. We want our students to be big hearted, discover what’s possible and become positive citizens in our ever changing society. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of the diverse society in which they live.
