Homework in Year 1
Autumn 1: Toys
Summer 2: Memory Box
Summer 1: Out of this World!
Launch day - 23.04.2025
We kicked off our new topic with a journey into space, focusing on the 1969 Moon Landings. The day began with children proudly sharing their holiday homework projects—from solar system models to rockets and fact files. The creativity was out of this world!
Our first activity explored the moon itself. After learning some amazing new facts, the children created beautiful foil-printed moon art. We then zoomed out to look at the solar system, learning where the moon fits and naming all the planets.
Later, we watched videos of Apollo 11 and Neil Armstrong, diving into key facts and vocabulary from this historic moment.
In the afternoon, we celebrated VE Day. After a class discussion using introductory slides, the children designed colourful tea set collages and ended the day dancing in true VE Day style!
Spring 2: Weather Warriors
Launch day - 24.02.2025
Year 1 had an incredible Launch Day as they delved into the fascinating world of weather! The day began with the children excitedly sharing their creative holiday weather projects, explaining their ideas and inspirations to their classmates. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they asked and answered questions about their work.
Throughout the day, the children were captivated by the chance to explore the science of wind. After watching a video about wind, they went outside to observe it and learned how to measure wind direction and speed. They made their own wind streamers and had fun experimenting with different materials to see which ones moved best in the wind.
The children were particularly engaged when learning about rain. They created their own rain gauges and discussed why rainfall is important for farmers and people living near rivers. They also explored the history of extreme weather events in the UK, creating a timeline to understand how these events have impacted the country.
At the end of the day, the children watched a weather forecast and then role-played how to do their own TV weather forecast. Their creativity and excitement made it a fun and memorable start to their "Weather Warriors" topic!
Spring 1: The Monarchy
Launch day - 08.01.2025
Year 1 had an incredible Launch Day as they delved into the fascinating world of the monarchy. The day began with the children eagerly sharing their creative holiday projects, explaining their ideas and inspirations to their classmates. It was wonderful to see their pride and excitement as they asked and answered questions about their work.
Throughout the day, the children were captivated by the chance to explore history through portraits and old black-and-white photographs. They found it fascinating to observe how life has changed over time, comparing the elegance of Queen Nefertiti’s ancient rule, Queen Victoria’s iconic era, and Queen Elizabeth II’s modern monarchy. Drawing their own royal portraits brought these moments of history to life in an artistic and imaginative way.
The children were particularly engaged when learning about Queen Elizabeth II's life. Using their history skills, they pieced together a timeline of her most important milestones, from her childhood to her coronation and wedding. Watching the black-and-white images of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation enthralled them as they imagined what it was like to witness such an event. They brought history to life by re-enacting key moments, using objects from around the classroom to make their scenes feel real.
To honor the late Queen Elizabeth II, the children ended the day by creating heartfelt collages that celebrated her life and legacy. Their creativity and curiosity shone throughout the day, making this a truly memorable experience for all involved.
Autumn 2: Our Remarkable School
Launch day - 04.11.2024
For our launch day, the children shared their homework projects, showcasing maps and models of places they know. We then practised some basic map and compass skills, studying a map of our local area in Wood Green. We then went on a local walk to Wood Green High Street and Noel Park Estate. We took a map with us, allowing us to locate places like the school, places of worship, the station, and the cinema by interpreting the symbols on the map. During our walk, we learned that Wood Green is in North London and how to find out the address of a house by looking for the number and the name of the road. We also learned about the cultural diversity of our local area by walking down the high street.
Back in class, the children examined a map of Wood Green, placed pictures of landmarks on it, and discussed the route they take to school and how it relates to other landmarks. To wrap up, we created a large map of the United Kingdom and labelled it with pictures of our favourite landmarks across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.
Autumn 1: Toys
Launch day - 04.09.2024
Year 1 has been exploring the history of toys, examining how and why they have evolved over time. Throughout the week, we presented our homework projects and created a display showcasing them. We shared our favourite toys from home, discussing their appearance, materials, and how they work. We also handled some old toys, figuring out how to play with them, and used pictures and real toys to create a timeline, comparing past and modern toys.
We developed our understanding of how toys work by creating riddles and guessing each other's descriptions. Finally, we coloured pictures and made toy-themed posters by cutting and sticking.
Summer 2: Memory Box
Launch day- 03.06.2024
Year 1 launched their new geography topic, "Where does my family come from?", with a half-term project involving memory boxes. Each student presented their memory box, sharing their family's history and origins, which fostered a sense of community and curiosity about global diversity. Building on these personal stories, students learned about the organisation of the world into countries, continents, and oceans. They identified and located all seven continents and the five major oceans through interactive activities, such as map labelling, games, and art projects. This approach connected personal histories with geographic education, enhancing students' understanding of the world and its diverse cultures.
Summer 1: Out of this World!
Launch day- 16.04.2024
We launched our new topic for this term, based around the historical events that lead up to the 1969 Moon Landings. Firstly the children were given the opportunity to show the rest of the class what they had created for their homework projects. We had some amazing pieces, ranging from models of our solar system, planets, sun and moons; models of different types of spacecraft and fact files. Congratulations to everybody who made something, picking winners this half term will be very hard.
During a break in our learning about The Space Race, we also took the opportunity to paint pictures of our Moon surrounded by a sky full of stars. Our final practical project evolved from discussions about how to stay alive during space travel and how we would need to be protected as we landed on different planets. Groups of children designed and made model space capsules to protect astronauts (or in our case, chocolate teacakes) as they touched down on a new planet or moon.
Spring 2: Weather Warriors
Launch day- 19.02.2024
Year 1 has started the new topic, “Weather Warriors.” We started by sharing our weather based homework projects before learning about what weather we would expect based on the season and climate.
We made and tested wind decorations; learned about adverse weather and how this has impacted the UK over the last century before planning and conducting our own weather forecasts.
Spring 1: The Monarchy
Launch day- 10.01.24
Year 1 were very excited to show their classmates the wonderful projects that they had been working on over the Christmas break; they were all amazing, a few passed all expectations! We were then given the opportunity to improve our observation, comparison and recall skills as we learned about and compared three of the most famous queens from history, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Nefertiti from Ancient Egypt. After drawing a portrait of the queen we found the most interesting, we then used our history skills to delve into Queen Elizabeth II’s life a little more. We re-enacted key moments from her life including her coronation and wedding. Now that we have King Charles III as our monarch, we compared his life with what we had already learned earlier in the day about other royals. Our final activity was to create a piece of artwork that would help us to remember Queen Elizabth II.
Autumn 2: Our Remarkable School
Launch day- 30.10.23
Year 1’s new topic is Our Remarkable School, where is it and what is it like? During launch day, the children presented their homework projects based on maps and models of places they live, have visited or created from their imaginations. We then learned about some basic map and compass skills while studying a map of our local area and Wood Green. This let us use a map to explore Wood Green and find buildings and roads we had been looking at. We were amazing and didn’t get lost.
Finally we learned a little about The United Kingdom and made a much larger map which we labelled with some pictures of our favourite landmarks in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Autumn 1: Toys
Launch day- 9.06.23
Year 1 will be studying the history of toys and how and why these have changed so much over time. As part of our topic launch, we shared our homework projects with the rest of our class before making a display of them. Some of us also shared interviews we conducted with our grandparents and parents discussing the toys that they used. We were able to handle some old toys and start to work out how to play with them. Next we started to make riddles about the toys so the rest of the class could guess which one we were thinking about. Finally we coloured pictures and completed cutting and sticking toy posters.
Launch day- 5.06.23
Year 1 launched their new geography topic, Continents and Oceans, by looking at our half term projects which were memory boxes. Each child had the opportunity to talk about their family history and where their family originates from. They then used this information to make more sense of the world and how it is organised into countries, continents and oceans. Through a number of activities we were able to learn the names and locations of all seven continents and the five oceans.
