EEDI

Our Curriculum Intent

At Noel Park, we aim to provide an exceptional and innovative education in EEDI which enables each and every one of our pupils to be proud of their individual identities. Our curriculum has been designed to be inclusive, balanced and thought-provoking pupils, and one in which pupils can see themselves reflected in. By enhancing children’s understanding of historical and current context as well as of the community around them, we develop a culture of embracing and celebrating our differences and similarities.

Sequencing and Progression

There are opportunities throughout the curriculum for children to build on their understanding of the world around them as they progress from EYFS to Year 6. Key concepts such as racism, diversity, heritage, ethnicity and identity are revisited both in dedicated lessons linked to PSHE and across the wider curriculum; and are consolidated throughout each year and across the year groups. Children build up a bank of knowledge about how diversity in the past and present impacts their own lives, their community and the wider world.

Key Events and Days

Black History Month

Throughout October, children and staff at Noel Park Primary School celebrated Black History Month. This was an opportunity to celebrate and understand the importance of Black History within world history,  going beyond stories of racism and slavery to spotlight Black achievements and contributions across the globe. This continued engagement with world history is vital for our children as it not only helps provide true context and understanding for the present yet enables all children in society to feel positively represented in society. Know the past, shape the future! At Noel Park, we want this to be a positive and engaging experience for every child.

One particular celebration that was a huge hit was the dance lessons lead by ‘Big H’ who had previously performed on ‘The Voice’. He taught the children and staff a variety of dance moves from different cultures and had everyone on their feet. The buzz and excitement flooded the school and continued in the playground with a dance off! One staff member said, ‘I was so happy to be showcasing some of my Nigerian dance moves!’

The month ended with our first Black History Month Art Exhibition. Families were delighted to be invited back into the school for the first time since lockdown. One parent commented, ‘The art work is exceptional and we are so glad to be a part of a school community that is proud to celebrate Black History Month.’

LGBT+ Month

During the month of February, we learnt about the importance of LGBT+ history by spotlighting the achievements of members of the LGBT+ community across history.

At Noel Park, we wanted this to be a positive and engaging experience for every child. Over the course of the month, we celebrated LGBT+ history, arts, culture and achievements in individual year groups but, more importantly, as a whole school. This culminated in an exhibition to showcase the children’s learning to their parents.

The aim of LGBT+ History Month was to celebrate everyone being equal and to promote awareness of the LGBT+ community. We wanted children to understand that we are all unique and that this is something to celebrate!
