The Future of Feminism

By: Tina Zhang and Kaitlyn Tse

Recently, there have been many reports of people being offended by sexist slurs against women. Now there are groups of people who call themselves feminists and support women’s rights. International Women’s Day was a recent holiday held on March 8th. Many companies have supported this holiday, including McDonald’s, Brawny, Google, and other big companies. The official definition of feminism is: the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.

This is one of the most iconic pictures of feminism. It depicts a woman exclaiming that women can do jobs too.

One of the first, and most important events was on July 19th & 20th of 1848. A group of more than 300 people, mostly women, gathered at Seneca Falls, New York and discussed about women’s rights. Ever since then, women have been defying stereotypes and earning respect from others. There have been many other events that have gathered women to fight for their rights. Compared to the past, women have gained many rights, such as the right to vote in 1920.

We asked some Marina students about how they feel about women rising up and how we’re taking action.

Rachael Wadginski, a 6th grader, says, “I really hope that women can get more equality and won’t get judged by their sex.”

Aliya Ng, one of Marina’s 7th graders, says, “People have been supporting women in the past years. Women have gotten more support against women’s stereotypes. I feel like the future will be bright for us.

It is important to have everyone be treated equally. We need to spread the message that women are just as powerful as men, and that women are strong. Women need to be respected as equally as men. It is not just for women’s rights, but for equal rights for everyone. The future is women.
