Welcome Mr. Romer

Mr. Romer is a new teacher at Marina Middle School. Before moving to the Bay, he grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and lived in Massachusetts and New York.

Q: What inspired you to be a teacher?

A: My college history professors taught me a lot and I really liked their classes. My mom was also a teacher and three of my six siblings are educators.

Q: Why did you decide to be a teacher?

A: I taught high school in the South Bronx, NY when I was 22, but only for a year. I didn’t teach for the next 20 years but I returned in 2008 because I realized it was the most fulfilling job I had.

Q: Where did you work before?

A: I have been fortunate to teach at Presidio for the past eight years. Before that I worked at many children’s software and toy companies, a TV station and a comedy club in SF - but never on stage.

Q: What do you teach now?

A: I teach 8th grade Social Studies and AVID.

Q: Why do you like teaching the subjects you teach now?

A: It’s important to me that 8th graders have an awareness of the past, as well as their important role in our society as they enter high school. History should be personal to everyone’s heritage.  It’s more than just old white guys in wigs!

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: I like to work in my yard, be outside with my family, pretend I’m still an athlete, watch spy movies and read historical fiction when I can.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

A: I think it would be fun to take a train across the Canadian Rockies or go to Scotland.

“I’m impressed by the strong community at Marina and I really want to thank everyone for welcoming me.” - Mr. Romer
