The Newest Horror Movies

It’s that time again, where the directors of Hollywood scare us with their new ideas for horror. 4 new movies are being expected, and two already out and popular, “Us” and “Pet Sematary.”

Us is another movie by Jordan Peele, the director and writer of Get Out, 2017. Us tells the story of doppelgangers. When a girl meeting her own when she was a young child, she meets hers again as an adult, but this time, for more than just meeting face to face.

Pet Sematary, a Stephen King novel, now turned movie, of a graveyard to bring things back to life. The original is shunned by the author, but the 2019 widely celebrated by Stephen King. After a man’s daughter dies, he learns of the Pet Sematary nearby the town he moved to. An old “Indian” burial ground, that is said to bring things back from the dead. The man buries his now dead daughter there, but faces even worse things than he expected.

The Curse of La Llorona, an urban legend that haunts most children who have been told the stories. La Llorona, or the “Weeping Woman,” is infamous due to kidnapping mischievous or bad children. The legend goes, that a beautiful woman (some say she was named Maria, others refuse of the other versions of her story say not), had two sons, with a handsome man. Soon however, after she bore him their children, her husband cheated on her. He said he needed someone to be younger, prettier, skinnier. Out of rage she drowned her sons in a nearby river; after their bodies lay in the river, lifeless, she realized what she had done. Jumping in, she committed her suicide to be with her children. However, she gained the opposite. Maria had committed 2 unforgivable sins, murder and suicide, and now cursed to haunt the world of the living, to look for the bodies of her children.

Midsommar is directed by Ari Aster, who some people say is a new horror movie genius, after filming Hereditary. Midsommar, which is coming soon in the summer, is about a shy girl named Dani, traveling with friends and her boyfriend to a small Swedish village, known for their festivals. This festival, as said in the trailers, happens every 90 years, As time goes by, she senses the danger and ominous feeling of this town, which soon reveals to be a pagan cult. Much like the click noise in Hereditary, there is an odd exhale repeated during the trailers.

While some love the thrill and adrenaline of horror movies, most teens disagree. “I think it’s stupid,” says Sandy Huang.
