Artificial Intelligence

By Pradipti Lama and Kristine Li

Will robots take over the world someday? Are you worried that robots might populate our world in the future? With the rapidly increasing technology, they might. Scientists are studying and researching more about advanced technology over many years and have been implementing  their knowledge on artificial intelligence. The advancements have surpassed our expectations and are still developing today.

We asked the following people the question, “Do you think artificial intelligence is important to the world? Why or why not?” Erin Guo in 7th grade has answered, “No, artificial intelligence is not important. Screw it. It’ll mess everything up.” There are many other people who believe that these robots are going to destroy the world, and there have been people who want to stop the “Robot Apocalypse” or the development of artificial intelligence. Though many people also believe that the significance of these robots is far greater, and will have a great impact on humanity.

There are many types of artificial intelligence. One type of artificial intelligence is a reactive machine. They cannot form memories or remember past experiences to make current decisions. They can only do what they are programmed to do. Limited memory artificial intelligence, like self-driving cars, are the second type of AI. These machines can remember their past experiences and use them for decisions they might do. The final type of AI are robots that are self-aware and self-conscious. They build machines like themselves, in which also have self-consciousness.

One of the most intelligent robots is Erica from Japan. She talks like a human and jokes like a human but does not walk like a human due to being paralyzed. She looks like a real human too. You wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference. Her creator is a Japanese innovator named Hiroshi Ishiguro. He has created many more robots that look identical to people as if they are their own clones.

With something this big like artificial intelligence, there comes great risks. Having these highly intelligent robots slowly populate Earth would result in unemployment. As these robots take over our jobs and are replacing workers who do repetitive work, we will no longer be needed. This will result in a community with less jobs. These robots also are extremely costly and need a lot of money to be able to produce continuously. As they are persistently developing, they will soon replace our everyday needs, making us lazier and more dependent on robots.

While artificial intelligence does have its disadvantages, it also has its advantages. For example, artificial intelligence would help if a device of yours got hacked or crashes. Having artificial intelligence one day transcend humanity and leaving human beings in the dust won’t actually have a gruesome result. They will be able to assist us with disease, poverty, and remove war. Not only that, but we will be able to send robots into space because robots are able to withstand the pressure in the atmosphere. Many scientists have guaranteed the benefits of advancing artificial intelligence.

Many people have different ideas about the concept of artificial intelligence, and whether it has contributed any good to our world is debatable. We can agree, however, that these robots have greatly impacted us. You may not know it, but artificial intelligence is always surrounding us and working competitively against us. We are constantly using them in our lives.
