Loneliness in Middle School

By: Samson Xu and Karol Guzman

Some students in middle school are lonely and they might not be open about it. They may feel alone even if they’re with other children. Loneliness can put the child at risk for other emotional challenges.

To be social, students need to make friends.  Strong relationships are the key to a happy life.

“Since I’m going to a high school that none of my friends are going to, I will be lonely and I will have to make new friends.” - Brian Liang. Some kids who are lonely get bullied by the other people around them.  The bullies could make the lonely kid get emotional or sad.

Some kids could also make friends online, such as on games or on social media. Kids could spend hours on games and make real friends. If the online friend meets up with the lonely kid, he has a chance of being social.  But too much internet is also bad for the kid, they could be vulnerable to online predators. They could also get cyber-bullied on social media. A youth group for the child is an easier approach to make friends.

If a child is feeling lonely, you should bring them to a place where they feel that they belong.  It could be an at school, a gym, or a local park. This could comfort the child and make them feel better, and they could make friends while they’re there. We wrote about loneliness because it is a real issue in schools right now. It may interest you guys to read it and learn about the issue.
