Memorial Day was founded by John A. Logan. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. 1971 was when the holiday became an official holiday. Waterloo, NY was declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by president Lyndon Johnson. Memorial Day is a holiday that represents United States for remembering and honoring people who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day is usually or always on the last day of May. People usually celebrated by gathering family or hosting parades.

Lena Huang an 8th grader says,”I celebrate memorial day by staying at home and relaxing.”

David Hu an 8th grader says,”I don’t celebrate it.”

On Memorial Day there are many events that are being held, for example, 2019 Memorial Day 1 Mile, 5K & 10K in San Francisco. 15% of the money from the registration fees will be donated to Operation Gratitude. This organization sends soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coast guardsmen deployed overseas individual care packages. This event is held on the 27th of May, which is Memorial Day. If you would like to volunteer on Memorial Day, there are many opportunities as well. A volunteer event that you can volunteer at is the Alemany Farm Volunteer Workday which is from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.
