Google’s New AI System

By Kaitlyn Tse

Several days ago, Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, released their AI system named Duplex, made with the purpose to foresee how far our technology can go in the future. Some of the main things Duplex can do is make contact with Google Assistant and make business calls, as well as recreate human conversations with real human beings. It can also beat humans at very complex games and translate languages.

Here are Marina students’ inputs on the question, “What do you expect of the future of artificial intelligence and technology in general?”

Rachael Lin, a seventh grader, says, “I think that in the future, artificial intelligence and technology would be more advanced and make life easier for people.

Mandy Zhu, an eighth grader, says, “I think in the future, everybody will have their brains programmed to do certain things when they’re born.”

During the conference where Duplex was revealed, it had demonstrated making a call to make a hair salon appointment, and made a reservation for a restaurant. While it was being displayed, controversy had rose on whether to praise this new technology or to be wary of it. Duplex had sounded so human that the people on the other side of the call actually believed that Duplex had been a real human being. Many people have called Duplex, “creepy”. Duplex had recreated human sounds such as “mmm” to fool the other person further into thinking the caller was human. Duplex can also handle being interrupted by others and wait. It is also aware of the fact that it is indeed a robot, and not human.
