Earth Day

By Deanna Lao and Isabella Preza

Earth Day is on April 22nd every year. Earth Day represents when the birth of the modern environmental movement took place, which was in the year 1970. Earth Day  signify how we are suppose to support and protect the environment. Earth Day was created because it was supposed to be a national day that is focused on the environment. Graylord Nelson founded Earth day after witnessing the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. The oil spill spreaded 5.5 miles off the coast. Earth Day is celebrated in United States, China, and 120 other countries. You can celebrate Earth Day by cleaning beaches, biking, conserving water, and more.

Susanna, an 8th grader, said, ”I have no opinion, I treat it as a normal day and I don’t have time to help volunteer or attend any events.”

=Founder of Earth Day

People treat Earth day like any normal day because they think Earth Day doesn’t matter and that Earth Day was created just because for no reason. Some Earth Day events that are hosted in San Francisco on April 20th are the Earth Day Festival 2019 and the Beach Cleanup hosted by Aquarium of the Bay. The festival is held at the Mission District from 11am to 7pm. Booths will have information on solutions to pollution, transportation issues, health care, technology, solar powered stages and other many important topics. This festival will have live bands and DJs, workshops, a sustainable fashion show, organic chef showcase, environmental speakers, and a clean energy zone. The volunteering event is from 10am to 1pm and it is at Aquatic Park on Jefferson street. It is a chance to give back to the Earth and help clean the trash off the beach. This will help keep trash out of the ocean and it will not harm aquatic animals, join this volunteering event.
