Working with Positive and Negative Space within tight constraints can create amazing results.
This project requires research, planning, and attention to craftsmanship.
STEP ONE - Artist Research in Sketchbook
This should take at least 1-2 pages in your sketchbook and include writing, sketching, and possible glued in examples

STEP TWO - Pick a Theme & Develop your Idea
WHAT will you visually communicate?
Base Level
energy of a song (Aggressive Jagged Edges vs. Smooth Flowing)
Creature in its habitat (Ex: Bird in Tree, Duck in Pond)
ChallengE Extension
Social Issue (Cause and Effect shown visually)
scene from book, Poem, or Fable (Ex: The Raven)
HOW will you visually communicate that idea?
Plan your work in your Sketchbook - 1-2 pages
Sketch shapes that support your theme - at least 20
get a critique - record in sketchbook
Does your theme "read" through the shapes?
What shapes should be main subject (Larger) and which should be smaller (secondary or context)?
Sketch out shape placement within a square - thumbnails
Turn planning in to Ms. Bailey
STEP THREE - Create your Idea as Artwork
Start your Final design project
consider mixing up the scale (relative size) of shapes
Remember that you can cut shapes out of shapes
Draw shapes with color pencil on black paper
at least 15 cut out shapes of differing scale
Shapes MUST touch a side of the paper
Fold the paper over and glue it down
be sure not to lose any pieces
STEP 4 - BLOG REFLECTION
respond to the following in paragraph format 5 sentence minimum.
What is Notan? What did you learn about positive/negative balance in a composition (Placement on paper)?
WHAT NOTAN DO YOU FEEL IS LEAST SUCCESSFUL? EXPLAIN WHY.
