BIRD 1 - BIRD RENDERED IN MEDIUM OF CHOICE
DESIGN AND RENDER A BIRD IN A TRADITIONAL MEDIUM WITH REALISM
BIRD 2 - BIRD ABSTRACTED RENDERED IN MEDIUM OF CHOICE
DESIGN AND RENDER A BIRD IN NON-TRADITIONAL MEDIUM(S) WITH ABSTRACTION
BIRD 3 - BIRD with ADAPTATION - RENDERED IN MEDIUM OF CHOICE
DESIGN AND RENDER A BIRD SHOWING HOW IT CAN ADAPT TO CHANGING ENVIRONMENT, HABITAT, OR SOMETHING THAT MIGHT THREATEN THEIR EXISTENCE. You need to include WHAT they are responding to in the illustration.
Research how other artists have rendered birds. My Modern Met
YOU WILL NEED TO SHOW ALL OF YOUR REFERENCE IMAGES, IDEAS, AND PROJECT DEVELOPMENT FOR BOTH WORKS IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK. INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE OF ORIGINALITY OF WORK WILL RESULT IN A LOWER GRADE.
Bird 3 - HOW CAN AN IMAGE RELAY INFORMATION?
For this themed project you will need to create a piece revolving around the subject of bird(s) and their use of adaptations for survival. Charles Darwin recorded evolutionary changes in finches of the Galapagos Islands - John James Audubon set out to paint every bird in north america - Walton Ford uses deceptively beautiful images to relay powerful information about extinction and survival research and development due Tuesday or Wednesday at Start of Class.
NOTE: You may use a different animal
Solving the Artist's Challenge
Research a specific bird or reason for adaptation
Gather facts & Data from legitimate source(s)
Research how artists have communicated information
Using your visual and data research, plan your original piece. Remember that you will use source imagery so you must use it in a "transformative" way.
all of this should be recorded in your sketchbook. at least 1 page each for #1-3 and 2 for planning #4
Project proposal critique start of class 1/17.
Comprise a question to guide your decision making process.
Example Question:
How can I communicate the changing migratory routes of the (bird) due to habitat lost to development in an abstracted way using line with color icons?
Example Solution:
Using tracing paper plot migratory routes over the past 10 years. Indicate development with Monopoly style hotel icons. Finished work will have that line & shape work as the bottom edge of the bird's wing. Will use watercolor, ballpoint pen and gouache.
Other Considerations:
Line work could be horizon line
could be from high point of view above migrating bird head looking down at changed routes
routes could be lighter the older they are to indicate time
distort shape of bird to match up with changed migration mapping points
Resources:
IMAGERY - I recommend using a still from a video rather than depending on images. You need to use creative commons imagery.
Blog Reflection
What bird did you choose? Why?
Why did you design Bird #1 the way that you did? What was successful? What would you do differently?
Why did you design Bird #2 the way that you did? What was successful? What would you do differently?
Why did you design Bird #3 the way that you did? Explain the issue facing the bird and how you have adapted the bird. What was successful? What would you do differently?
What did you learn in creating three works in slightly different ways of the same subject? What advice would you give to someone doing this project?
