Themed Drawing with pen/pencil and color divisions.
While you may use any theme for this project, it is most successful with contained objects/images (clear outlines)
Slideshow with directions & examples
7 objects that support a clear theme
7-9 shapes with color drawing inside about 50% of page
Tips: Pick a theme that you are very interested in. Think a city, country, personal goals or dreams, family memories, aquatic animals in a specific region, reptiles from a specific region. It may NOT be of any commercial character or copyrighted content (celebrities, pro sports, tv shows or movies).
STEP 1 - PLANNING
Create a Google Doc and copy/paste the following on it and make sure that it is viewable by anyone at PUSD so that your teacher can view it. You will turn that shared doc in to Schoology for your planning.
Theme Brainstorm - Brainstorm 10 possible themes for your artwork
Choose your theme - Brainstorm 10 possible images for your artwork
Find images of those items and crop them close the the object's edges. It is important that they be very clear images.
Composition Study 1 - On another page use copy/paste on the images to FILL a page with 7 images and make 3 larger and 3 smaller than their actual size.
Composition Study 2 - Do the same thing AGAIN on another page with a different combination of images and sizes
Composition Study 3 - Do the same thing AGAIN on another page with a different combination of images and sizes
Get peer feedback - which composition is most interesting and balanced.
Finalize your composition and figure out where your shapes will be arranged so that around 1/2 of your drawing is in color within division shapes.
STEP 2 - Drawing
PRINT our your reference image.
Your printer paper is 8.5"x11" while your paper is 9"x12", so put a 1/2" border on the long side and a 1/4" border on the short side.
You may use a grid to transfer the images, but make sure that you draw lightly so that they don't show up when you erase them. The better option is to draw the division shapes and use those as references for your drawing.
Measure out, Draw, or Trace the division shapes that will be filled with color
Draw the Contour lines for your objects LIGHTLY. Remember that contours do not have tons of detail, but will give you references for your final drawing. Start from an area that is easy and tackle the more challenging areas when you have gained skill and confidence.
Once you finish the contours, have a peer or teacher take a look at them as a double-check for accuracy.
If you are struggling - TALK to your teacher, Draw a grid in that area, or ask a peer for help. If you get really frustrated then work on another area for a bit.
STEP 3 - Drawing in Value & Detail
Go slowly and work in a way that you won't smear areas you already worked on.
The areas outside of your color shapes may be done in pencil or pen - both can smear, so be aware of your media.
With color pencil, make sure to slowly build up color and use LOTS of different colors within each area to create rich colors. Example: Greens use yellows, greens, blues, purple & red shadows.
ALL objects should have a FULL RANGE OF VALUE. That means that if you take a photo of it with your phone and put a B/W filter on it EVERY object would have white, light grays, medium grays, dark greys, and black.
