or any origami animal
Follow the video to complete 15 minutes of drawings
You may pick an image from the slides on this SLIDESHOW or draw your own origami object.
Put the crane/object on a piece of white paper
Adjust it so that you have a good view and the shadows are interesting
"Trace" it in the air to gain muscle memory and understanding of the shapes
DRAW FOR 15 Minutes using the timer on the SLIDESHOW
Start with the easiest triangle and draw contour lines - LIGHTLY.
Shade in when you get a chance and realize that sometimes values are darker on the OUTSIDE of the object or fold.
Pick 3 color pencils - one warm color, one cool color, one dark color.
Read #5 below and TEST your color combination in your sketchbook. CREATE A VALUE SCALE with the 3 colors and take a photo of it then put a black/white filter on the photo. Does it go from light to dark? If not, adjust your colors. Make sure you like the colors before continuing.
Put your crane/origami still life setup directly above your drawing.
Slowly draw the contours of your cranes - LIGHTLY with a pencil (2H). Rotate the object as you draw different ones.
Then use ONLY your 3 color pencils to create color cranes. Let each color be dominant in one crane. Ex: I chose orange, lime green, and dark purple as my colors. I will draw using mostly orange with a little green and purple for one. For the next I will draw mostly with green with a little orange and purple. The last will be mostly purple with a little orange and green. Mix and overlay colors. Try crosshatching.
Start by lightly drawing the contours - SUPER DUPER LIGHT
Lightly shade with your base hue (color).
Slowly add to the color with just paper for white areas and adding other colors for medium or dark values. Don't be afraid to use blue, green, or burgundy shadows - they are way more interesting than black.
Have fun with colors!

Look carefully at your crane - adjust any differences in value or shape
Squint at your crane - Where are the darkest and lightest areas? Draw those
Look at the shadow. Where is it darkest? Do the lines end abruptly, softly, or fade out. Is there more than one shadow?
Boring background? Well then add a pattern - think wallpaper
DON'T FORGET THE SHADOW!! Even if there is a pattern in the background.
You used many types of drawing styles, materials, and grounds (types & colors of paper).
Discuss your experiences with the mediums and grounds. Which did you enjoy the most? The least? Explain.
Which drawing do you feel is least successful? Explain why.
Compare your least successful with your most successful. What are the similarities and main differences?
If you were to draw an object, which medium and ground would you choose? Explain why.
