The importance of value in artwork can be immense.
Inquiry Question: How can I combine an image and pattern through value to create new meaning?
Aaron Douglas - A closer look at Aspiration
Now that you have created a value scale and practiced grid drawing, you will create a composite image using only value. Working with a grid for image replication you will add to the meaning of the image with a pattern.

Find a Pattern - Grid & Draw -
Shade - Reflect
Image- Find an image that is interesting to you
• 5"x 7" (Vertical or Horizontal)
• It should be an image that can be deconstructed into shapes
• Is YOUR original image or Creative Commons (NOT copyright infringement)
Pattern - What pattern would add meaning or interest to the image?
• Think about how the image & pattern can interact
• Elephant + tree pattern = conservation
• Rose + poem = illustration of poet's imagery
• Create a template to trace about 2-3" OR words of varying size
Grid - This will make it easier to accurately replicate your image
• Recommend making this into contour shapes by putting a piece of tracing paper over the photograph and tracing the main shapes of the photo.
• Then put a 1" grid on the image
• On a 11" x 15" paper - Draw a ½" Border
• Then a VERY LIGHT 2" grid inside Border
Draw - Go slowly and be accurate
• Transfer the image, grid square by grid square
• Draw the contours (outlines like a coloring book) lightly
• Once the image is replicated in contour, overlay with pattern
Shade - Go slowly and shade smoothly. Use a full range of value!
• Consider how value can accentuate your main subject or idea
• Start by erasing your grid lines and clarifying any lines as needed
• Pick one shape and shade it black. Then move to the one next to
it with a lighter value.
• EVERY TIME YOU GET TO A LINE SHADE IN A DIFFERENT VALUE
• Do not smear to make your shading smoother
Peer Critique Peer #1________ Peer #2 ______ _
Do not tell your peers anything. Don't explain your idea or the connection between your image and pattern
What do they think the connection between the image and pattern are? Ask why they think that

It is a 4"x7" image and needs to fit inside the rectangle. Vertical or Horizontal.
Your slide is numbered to match your portfolio/phone holder number. You must use an original photo or one from Creative Commons.
It's important to do this on time so that it will be printed out in time and your will receive full credit.
Remember that SHAPES are closed areas.
Outside Measurement is 12"x16"
1" Border all around
INSIDE the border draw a 2" grid as LIGHTLY AS POSSIBLE
Support and/or explain your statements
with links to artwork and very specific descriptions. Include peer critique
feedback as support or critical evaluation.
l. Why did you choose your image and pattern? How did the
pattern accentuate your original image?
2. Were you successful in using a full range of value and shading?
3. How were you successful in completion of this project?
