Understand how color can reinforce the idea of space
Understand how scale can be used to demonstrate space
Demonstrate how complex narratives can be created with little detail
In your sketchbook create mini compositions that show the 6 ways to create depth and the illusion of space. Watch the video for a step by step example.
When complete, submit a photo of your work in the Schoology assignment "6 Ways to Create Depth"
Step 1: Color Wheel
Step 2: Create a 4"x6" collage composition with warm and cool colors to show space
Other Inspiration: Joseph Albers Interaction of Color exercises - 1 color appears as 2 (resource)
Create a color wheel in color pencil using all 12 color.
Label the following:
Primary Colors - original colors (Red, Blue, Yellow)
Secondary Colors - 2 primaries mixed (Violet, Green, Orange)
Tertiary Colors - primary and secondary mixed
Analogous Colors - next to each other on the wheel
Complementary Colors - across from on the wheel
Warm Colors - yellow to red-violet (think sun/fire)
Cool Colors - violet to yellow-green (think ocean/land)
Warm Colors appear to advance and make spaces feel cozy.
Cool Colors appear to recede and make spaces feel more open.
Create a 5"x7" collage composition with warm and cool colors to show space. Play around with placement of colors to create different effects. Layer warm over cool to create advancing effects, for example.
