Early Literacy Group – Closing the GAP

 The special education team is offering a new literacy program. This program is developed to enhance the literacy skills of four year olds going into kindergarten. We will also address the language, motor, and academic needs of children as defined in their IEPs.

 The Early Literacy Program is voluntary and will be held outside the regular preschool day. We will meet on Thursdays before regular class times starting September 18th. This program does not change the amount of service your child receives during the regular school day.

 The class will be held in the preschool office. You will be able to drop off your child at the outside door. The special education team will transition your child to his or her classroom.

 We will be using articulation and pre-reading screening tools to determine your child’s current skills and assess progress. The screening will be done with in classroom time at least three times during the program.

 Parents who agree to have their child participate in the program will be responsible for transportation to and from school.

 As a parent of a child in the program, you will be asked to work with your child at home. We will also be sending a new book home every two weeks for you to read with your child. Parents are responsible for returning items in a timely manner and replacing any items lost or damaged.

 A Google web site has been established containing valuable information about the program. It contains the schedule, daily lessons, home work, and tips for helping children at home. You can access the site at https://sites.google.com/a/jeffcoschools.us/early-childhood-literacy-project/.
