The Runaway Pumpkin

Lesson week one of two:

A bumpin' thumpin' rhyming picture book about the delicious fate of a gigantic

pumpkin on the run. When Buck, Billy, and their little sister Lil spy the biggest

pumpkin they've ever seen, they can't resist. Buck and Billy try to roll the

pumpkin down the hill to show everyone, but it's too big! Before they know it,

it's bumping and thumping and rolling down the hillside out of control. This

read aloud Halloween treat is perfect for kids and families.

Use the cutouts of the pumpkin pie pieces with the sequencing words on them,

e.g., first/middle/last and/or beginning/middle/end, etc., to retell the story of the

Runaway Pumpkin. They can also practice using the pumpkin pie cut outs while

pretending to make pies and/or when making a pumpkin pie at home.

Lesson week two of two:

Retell The Runaway Pumpkin. Use the sequencing pumpkin pie cutouts to help

organize story retell, using the words first/middle/last, etc. The pie crust is #1.

The pie filling is #2. The whip cream topping is #3.

Students recall stories best if taught to visualize the story in their head. They will

learn to draw out the story using the mini books. By thinking of the pictures in their

head, they can create a mind movie. This helps with recall of the story elements.
