"I Can't" said the Ant

Lesson plan week 1/2:

*The book, "I can't" said the ant, is an unbelievable snowballing tale with lots of interesting rhymes that uses illustrations as clues for meaning. The back of the book sums up many of the silly rhymes found in the book, such as, "Teapot fell, said the dinner bell." "Is she dead? asked the bread." "Broke her spout, said the trout." "Push her up, said the cup." "I can't, said the ant." "Please try, said the pie." "You'll have fun with this one."

*Kinesthetic game lesson: recognize and produce rhyming words. Guess and do the loco-motor skill...start when you think you know what it is...

Lesson plan week 2/2:

*The students will share the page they completed about their favorite rhyming book at home. Students will have the opportunity to ask and answer questions about their favorite book.

* Read "I can't" said the an, with the students and have them complete the rhyme as a group. This is called choral reading which improves reading fluency. If a child reads fluently, their comprehension of the story increases dramatically.

*Complete the "Rhyme Away Car Game". A car will be drawn using dry erase marker. As the phrases are read, the student will guess the missing word. Then they will erase that part of the car until there is nothing left of the car.
