Caps for Sale

Lesson one of two:

  • Read the book, Caps for Sale. The students will be asked to predict "what comes next" in the story. This is called "Story Grammar" from the Tool of the Mind curriculum. The children will practice the skill of making similar predictions in their classroom as wel

  • Sort toys or pictures with the initial sounds of the hard "c" and of the continuant "s."

  • Use unifix cubes to create simple and complex patterns. Seeing patterns helps children learn to read and complete mathatical problems. Start with making simple patterns and then moving to more difficult ones, e.g., AAAA, ABAB, AABB, ABCABC, etc.

Lesson two of two:

  • Teacher will read the story, Caps for Sale, out loud with the students' help.

  • Sort "c" and "s" picture cards. Teach the student to listen to a word and match the speech sound to the referenced picture.On the Tools of the Mind sound map, the picture of the sun represents the letter "s" and the picture of the car represents the letter "c." Match carrot/car, camera/car, singing/sun, seesaw/sun, etc.

  • Complete the "Pattern Movement Game" in which the students match movements of their body when they see a shape, e.g., "Stomp your feet when you see a circle and shake your fist, when you see a square."
