The Land of Many Colors

Lesson one of two:

The Land of Many Colors is a book about how people want everything their way, purple, blue or green. Eventually, they fight and take things from each other. The teachers will point out how the pictures show what happens in the story and to recognize action and emotions of the people in the story.

Children learn concepts best when paired with movement. They will complete a three part obstacle course with items

related to The Land of Many Colors. First, they will throw bean bags into different colored bins. Then, they will jump

over shapes in a line while naming them rapidly, a skill needed for reading fluency. Finally, they will crawl through a tunnel and sort toys into categories of people, toys and food. The children will tell us what they did to practice using past tense verbs, e.g., walked, jumped, sorted, etc.

The teachers will present a situation of "taking toys away" from a friend using puppets and a picture card. Then, the

teachers will have the children discuss the picture card and teach them how to use the Take Five Calm Down flip book

to calm down after a difficult situation.

Lesson two of two:

During the second week of reading the book, The Land of Many Colors, the children will take turns "reading the pictures" to tell about actions and emotions of the people in the story.

Once again the children will learn concepts through movement. They will waive scarves to the music of the "Stop and Go" song. Knowing how to "stop" and "go" helps with self regulation skills and problem solving. Then, the children will create a unique home by picking up different colored shapes and putting it on their piece of paper while going back and forth on a scooter.

Finally, the children will discuss a picture card with puppets of "what is an accident." Often times, children of this age confuse "on purpose" with "accident" which can cause misunderstandings of problems.
