Kiki's Blankie

Week one of two:

*The children will name picture cards beginning with the "t" and

"k" sounds in the initial position of words. Children often

substitute t/k while speaking so it is important they learn that "t" is

a tippy sound with the tongue behind the upper teeth so the visual

cue is touching the index finger to the center part above the lips;

likewise, "k" is a backscraper with the tongue behind the lower teeth

and the index finger points to the throat. For the game the teacher

places the cards face up in a pile and the children name the "k"

and then the "t" cards from each deck. Finally, they take turns

saying a picture and determining if it belongs in the "k" or "t" pile.

*Kiki's Blankie is written and illustrated by Janie Bynum. It is

about Kiki, a monkey that adores a polka-dot blankie. With it in

hand Kiki can do and be anything she wants. In a flash her

blankie transforms her into a cowgirl, a pirate, even a superhero

with a cape! So when the blankie is turned into a sail and blows

away, Kiki will do anything to get it back

*The children will share what they could pretend their blankie is

and what they could do with their blankie, e.g., sled on it, etc.

Then they will glue cloth to represent the blankie on paper

taped to the wall. Working on a vertical surface encourages

correct grasp of writing utensils. Then, the children will draw a

colorful picture of what they can do with their blankie. This

teaches children analogies and how to think out of the box.
