If You Give a Cat a Cupcake

Lesson one of two:

The teacher will read a word association book, If You Give

a Cat a Cupcake, written by Laura Numeroff and Illustrated

by Felicia Bond. The book is circular, so at the end of the

book the events starts over again. Retelling

a book many times teaches the skill of sequencing.

The students will rapidly name "k" and "t" toys or cards

from the story. Then the toys or cards will be mixed up in a

pile. The speech sound "k" is made by placing the tongue

behind the lower teeth. The speech sound "t" is made by

placing the tongue behind the upper teeth. With "k" and "t'

the air comes out of the mouth. Have your child say the "t"

and "k" speech sounds with a tissue in front of his/her mouth

and see the tissue move. Also, rapidly name action cards

with correct use of "pronoun + linking verb + action."

Sing "Happy Birthday" and then the students will share with

each other their favorite kind of birthday cake.

Finally, the students will write a story extension from the

stem, "If you give a cat a candle, he'll want to _____ ."

To complete story extensions, the students share an idea,

then they draw a picture and, finally they write a sentence.

Lesson two of two:

The teacher will read a word association book, If You Give a

Cat a Cupcake, written by Laura Numeroff and Illustrated by

Felicia Bond. The students will complete closed

sentences stated by the teacher, so that they can retell

the story. Retelling a book many times teaches the skill

of sequencing and it increases retention of vocabulary

words.

Name action pictures using the grammatical structures of

"pronoun + linking verb + object." Rapid naming of picture

cards improves reading fluency. The next activity is to sit

in a circle and to pass a ball while saying, "If you give a cat

a_(noun)_. He will ask for _______. He will _(verb)_ it"

For example, "If you give a cat a book. He will ask for glasses.

He will read it."

Complete a story extension from one of the choices from

the previous game that was played. "If you give a cat a

_(noun)_, He will ask for ________. He will _(verb)_ it."

To complete a story extension, the students share their

idea verbally, then they will draw a picture and, lastly

they write a sentence.
