The Secret Birthday Message

We will begin our literacy group with reading The Secret

Birthday Message by Eric Carle. It is a book about a boy

that gets a mysterious letter written in code to lead him to

his birthday present. The students will name prepositions,

such as, "through," "behind," etc., while reading the map

to discover the location of the present.

The students and the teacher will participate in a treasure hunt

while at school by reading clues on a map as follows:

"When you come to group, Read the map.

Look for a ramp. We're going to the gym.

Look for a computers. We're going to the technology lab.

Look for lots of books. We're going to the library.

Look for the room with crayons and paper.

We're going back to group.

Once the students return to group, they will complete a story

extension to share a favorite place that they have visited. The

writing stem will be, " I went to the ___________ and I saw a ____."

For example, "I went to the mountains and I saw a lake."
