The Way I Feel

Lesson 1:

  • Read, "The Way I Feel" by Janan Cain to teach children how to identify emotions in themselves and others.

  • The children will make faces in the mirror to represent feelings the characters in the book displayed.

  • The children will complete an obstacle course to learn preacademic skills through active play which increases their attention to the task and retention of the concepts.

  • *Rapid naming of emotions

  • *Balancing on different colored stepping stones

  • *Saying toys with "f" and "b" in the initial postion of words at the beginning of the tunnel and sorting them by the letter at the end of the tunnel. Hint: Teach "f" by putting peanut butter, frosting, etc., on the lower lip, scraping it off with the upper teeth and blowing.

  • Make a connection between the text and their experience by making a clay face and labeling the face and emotion, e.g., smile/happy,frown, sad, etc.,

  • Share what they made using descriptive words and complete sentences,

  • Make connections between text and experience and actions and feelings.

  • "I am happy when _______."

Lesson 2:

  • "The Way I Feel" by Janan Cain teaching the children how to express their feelings with words.

  • The children will look in the mirror and practice labeling feelings while asking, "How do you feel when you look that way?"

  • The children will complete an obstacle course to learn preacademic skills.

  • Rapid naming of emotions

  • Balancing on different colored stepping stones

  • Saying toys beginning with "f" and "b" at the beginning of the tunnel and sorting them by the letter at the end of the tunnel.

  • Teach "f" by putting peanut butter, frosting, etc., on the lower lip and scraping it off with the upper teeth and blowing.

  • Share about feelings connection card with the stem phrase of, "I am sad when _______." This helps them make ties between feelings and actions.
