The Paperboy

Lesson one of two:

Vocabulary: wake, deliver, moon, stars, sun, dawn, dew, career, job, occupation

Before reading The Paperboy, the students will discuss what time they get up in the morning and

what it looks like outside early in the morning. They will imagine getting up and going straight

to work when everyone else is sleeping and answer the question, "Does that sound like a fun job?"

The students will look at a newspaper and talk about sections of the newspaper and what they can learn

from reading a newspaper. Finally, they will learn vocabulary words which will be pre-taught by using

pictures with definitions on the back of the pictures.

Read the book. The Paperboy, is about the paperboy and his dog waking up when the mornings

are still dark and even cold. His family members are still asleep. After they finish their breakfast,

they put the newspaper in a large red bag and go delivery. The paperboy rides his bike and his

dog follows. They knows their routes well by heart. It is the happiest moment for them. Little

by little, the world around them wakes up, and he is about to finish his delivery. When they get

back home, their family wakes up, but the paperboy and his dog crawl back into bed and sleep.

Now, it's time for them to dream.

Lesson two of two:

While reading The Paperboy, the children will describe the time of day the story takes place by

using examples from the story. Then they will answer the questions, such as, "Why do you think

this little boy delivers papers so early in the morning? What does he do with the money?" Discuss

the way the boy in the story felt about having his dog for company while doing his job. These

questions are inferences which make the children use their own life experiences to answer the

questions.

Read and retell the story of The Paperboy.

The students will tell if they have pets and how they care for their pets. Finally, they will

share their favorite and least favorite things about their pets. Complete the
