Signs

Week 1/2:

The children will begin their day by naming pictures of shapes rapidly. Children learn concepts in a developmental order of matching, pointing and then naming. Research shows that saying words in categories using picture cues increases literacy skills in the later stages of reading.

The target speech sound of "sh" in the initial position of words will be modeled throughout the session.

We will read the book called, Signs, by Susan Canizares and Pamela Chanko. The authors use many familiar illustrations of signs that the children will see while in their community.

After reading the story, the children will be asked to use a complete sentence while pointing to the magnetic sign and then saying the stem, "I can read_____."

This is called "reading environmental print" which helps make the connections between text and the child's real life experience and teaches how to extend thinking skills.

A similar lesson will be completed in week 2/2:

The children will have the opportunity to share the pictures they drew of signs at the beginning of the session.
