Clifford's First Day of School

For our first Literacy Group we will play a short name game to help children learn the names of their friends.

Lesson Plan 1:

  • We will start our first literacy group by learning each others names

with a quick name game. Then we will practice gross motor movement while doing an obstacle course and taking turns. During the obstacle course the children will jump on and name “s” pictures in the hoops, making the “s” snake sound as they go across the balance beam and matching the “same” colored shapes.

  • After we have used up some energy we will read about Clifford’s First Day of School, thinking about what might be the same or different about our school and Emily Elizabeth’s school. The children will identify how they felt on his or her first day of school.

  • Next the children will take turns sorting pictures of school activities from the book that are the same or different from our school. This is an important analytical skill that leads to classifying and other reasoning abilities.

  • Finally, the children will think of their favorite activity and share it with a friend in a “turn and talk” or “share the news.”
